water boiling device for mini-kit

Problem:
for water carrying you can use condoms, but how to boil it? You can forget the tin can, because it contains not enough water, and I rather use little plastic boxes because you can get them everywhere in a variety of sizes.
I tried folding aluminum foil, it works, but not to stable.
Solution:
I took the aluminum package from vacuum sealed coffee, remove the paper sleeve. Inside this foil is coated with some plastic, which makes this bag very stable. Just attach a string to two holes in the upper rim. I was able to boil water over a fire by hanging it from a stick. What I have to test is if I can use it several times without the plastic coating getting burnt or disintegrating. Anywhy, I have something which goes in the mini-kit.

Any comments or ideas?

That's one of the best ideas I've heard yet! The minikit is one of the toughest to find a suitable container for boiling water in. The only thing I've been able to come up with until now, is a 'flimsy' aluminum foil container, small tin can, or I carry my canteen with a canteen cup.

Thanks for the idea. Now I'll have to search for a similar item.

You use what you have on you, then you improvise! :)

You can pack your kit in a tin can. A soup can will function, even if it could stand to be larger.

Anyone know if someone manufactures a folding-cup style device from a metal?

Stryver,
thanks for the reply. A (soup)can will be a good boiling device, but I tried to find something flat, which has about the size of a pack of cigarettes, or I wouldn´t have it always on me. If I´m out with more gear, for instance on a field exercise, I have my mess kit + canteen with me in pouches of my harness, that means I don´t have this problem.
But if I go skiing or snowboarding, then the survival-kit should be real small, or it would stay in the hotel or car (I do know myself!!)

Why are we boiling the water? Replace the water-boiler with a handkerchief, a plastic bag, and a few water-purification tabs. This way you can purify liquid water you find with the tabs in the bag, and if you have snow & ice, you can fill the handkerchief, hang it near your fire, but not directly over it, and locate the plastic bag beneath it. The fire will do a suitable job of melting the snow, and you will have some liquid. The larger the fabric you use for this, the more snow you will melt in a day. One parachute traingle filled with as much snow as one person could lift, and refilled as it melted, produced more water than 8 people needed in the 8 or so hours we had it working. Make it a blaze orange fabric square, and you can use it as a signal as well.

Hi Stryver,
I also carry water purifying tablets, from the German MRE. But: a hot soup, or coffee, or just hot water helps against hypothermia, and its a great morale booster. Also you need hot water to prepare food. But the method you described works also, I use my "dog-rag" for it, which I always carry with me because it´s a multi-purpose tool.

You could heat the hot water for the soup or cocoa in the little bags the mix comes in by filling it with water and adding a few small hot pebbles. Since you aren't trying to boil for decon now, and just need warmth, that might be easier.
