Hi All,
I searched around the forum a bit and couldn't find answers to all of the questions I have so please bear with me as I never have used water jet services before. My questions are below:

1. Can water jet service provider/machinist work with 2D cad files?
2. How much work is involved in setting up the machine to work with a 2D CAD file?
3. I have blades in range from 7 - 21 inches in overall length with various thicknesses of 1/8", 3/16", and 1/4". What should I expect for pricing per blade blank? What is a good deal, what isn't?
4. What is a typical turn around time for lets say 10 blanks?

I understand that these questions can be dependent on a lot of other factors, but, I am just looking for a generalized explanation so that I can have an idea of what I should expect.

Thanks for all the help.

Call Leading Edge Fabrication and ask for Mark or call New Jersey Water Jet and ask for Larry.

1-Yes
2-It depends on how good your cad file is. If its decent they usually don't have to do too much.
3-that depends on your quantity and how much time is spent changing stock and stuff. Prices can vary a lot but in general you get the best prices by simply having them cut more pieces. It can cost as little as a couple of bucks per piece for a large order to $20+ per piece for a couple of knives. Many shops have sort of a minimum price, they need to be paid a certain amount or it isn't worth their time to set it up. Once it's set up they can crank them out easily and the price per piece drops.
4-That just depends on the shop.

The best thing to do is what Erik suggested and call some shops. Also check out your local yellow pages. You might be surprised and find a shop nearby that is capable of doing what you want and easy to work with.
