Water purification question...

Ok I am in the process of buying some form of water purification... I'm willing to spend up to AUD$1000 or a little bit more if need be. I would like to be able to purify even the most rank of water. Even salt water would be a bonus. This will be used for the bush mainly but I would like to get something that would be able to purify salt water or a whole range of the worst crappy water if possible.

Is a desalinator the way to go? If so what would be effective for around AUD$1000 give or take a bit? Is UV purification the way to go? What is the best UV water purifier money can buy? Is pump purification the way to go? Chemical? Tablets? Other? Combinations of the above??? BRANDS? MODELS?

I know this is a pretty broad question and I know it will seem lazy to ask such a question but I really value input from people who have already done the research so I can save some time AND get the RIGHT advise.

Also it will help others who may have the same hill of learning to climb as me! ;)

Thanks!

Terry.

HTI makes some neat products:

http://www.hydrationtech.com/

They work by forward osmosis, and produce something like a sports drink, rather than pure water. They require a little bottle of syrup for each batch, but they can turn the nastiest water into something drinkable. And they have one that works on sea water too.

Are you talking home use???...

http://www.waterwise-distillers.com/waterwise-model-1600.htm

There is also reverse osmosis pumps for boat survival kits.

No talking about a survival situation in the bush. May have access to the sea though which is why I wanted desalination as well. Think mainly of filthy streams and puddles etc but with some sea water thrown in to boot ;).

Thanks for the link though I would like to get one for home as well in time. BTW what is reverse osmosis and how does it compare to other purification techniques? Damn there is just sooooo much to learn with water purification!

Thanks.

Great link mate! This is right up the alley I'm thinking about. Just need to be able to use it in the bush for extended periods of time. I will keep this one bookmarked! Just need to compare it to others to see what is the way to go... Need to learn much more before I make a decision. I was hopeing someone has already done this research so I could learn from them and get a bit of a short cut but every bit of information is muchly appreciated.

Cheers!

What if you want just water?

Skam

Then you're SOL unless you have a filter of some kind. :o That's one of their downsides along with needing to have a supply of the syrup. But the advantage is that you can use water that is so muddy and nasty that it would quickly clog a similarly priced filter. I see it as more of a short term emergency item rather than something for regular use. And the prices are pretty good if they live up to their claims.

Soulds like only a distiller will meet all your needs. Here's a place to start: www.thesustainablevillage.com

Google search: solar distiller portable

The only problem is that some of the portable units produce what seems to me to be too little water for even one person in a hot climate.
