i have some katadyn micropur tablets and noticed that it says 1 tablet treats 1 litre of water...

i was wondering what would happen if i had less water and used the tablet to treat it? would i get sick?

i carry the 1 quart canteens and i know they are pretty darn close to a litre but was wondering if i had less water and used these tablets.

just a question that popped into my mind.

hopefully some members will be able to provide some feedback.

cheers. thanks in advance

If they are nalgene bottles they have markings up to 1000ml which is the same as 1 litre.

lol... i wrote above that i carry the 1 quart US canteens...

guess i need to rephrase the question.. say i had only half a quart and put in a full tablet... was wondering if the affects would be deadly or not :)

cheers

I don't know the difference between us gallon and gallons. I could look it up but its late. If you want to know if it make you sick, swallow a tablet :D

the imperial system is weird.

Got a few of those out in the garage from my military days. Have not been used in years. The wife would probelly love it if I got ride of a bunch of gear I no longer use, but just can't seem to get ride of it. Call it nostalgia.

BTW, no need to sir me I work for a living:)

good to know.

army issue gear seems to last forever...

many of those proudly serve the armed forces and the gear they served with have alot of meaning to them.

thank you for serving in the army.

still curious about my question... think i'll write katadyn and see what they say

Given that a quart is so close to a litre I doubt it would make an appreciable difference. Recipes routinely use quarts and litres interchangeably when both metric and imperial measurements are given, so I suspect it's fine here too. If the tablets were that dangerous to use I think they'd get pulled from the shelves rather quickly.

TO answer your question.

Probably not but it would taste like crap. The tabs are easy to break in half so this shouldnt be an issue.

You can break the tabs for smaller containers. If you were really off, just waiting a little longer would be okay too. Conversely, you can cut the dosage if the exposure time is longer-- like overnight. The difference between a quart and a liter is no big deal. Water temperature, turbidty (silt, organic matter, etc) and time are more important.

Check out the PDF file at http://www.aquamira.com/consumer/aquamira-water-treatment-drops/BPL_2_Efficacy-of-Water.pdf/view for good info on chlorine dioxide.

You are not supposed to touch the tabs at all. Read the precautions from the manufacturer.
A liter is pretty much a quart don't worry about the difference.

Chlorine Dioxide creates a reaction so after at least 30 min most of the reaction is complete; there is no trace chemicals left over after just O2.

First off liability warnings would have us living in a bubble if you heeded them all.;)

Secondly, I was answering what would you do with half a quart of water.

Third I have drank 100's of quarts of Chlorine Dioxide water and nobody can tell me there is nothing left in it after 2 days let alone 30 mins. I can taste it. Its not unpleasant but its there.

Just trying to disseminate accurate information. I was selling this stuff when it first came out on the market. I know of what I speak.
Those tabs can burn your skin if you touch them; the package say CORROSIVE.

Here is some info from their site;
Chlorine dioxide, a well established disinfectant is the active ingredient in Aquamira® Water Purifier Tablets. Chlorine dioxide is iodine and chlorine free. The unique formula works by releasing nascent oxygen, a highly active form of oxygen, which is a strong oxidant and a powerful germicidal agent. Chlorine dioxide has been used by municipal water treatment plants to kill a variety of waterborne pathogens since the late 1940s. Unlike free chlorine (familiar as household bleach) or other halogen chemicals (such as iodine), chlorine dioxide does not create potentially harmful by-products.

The active agent is oxygen that is released when in contact in water;it is an oxidizer.

the thing is that i dont use Aquamira tablets...

The simplest and healthiest way to conserve water

Use in clear water. Ideal for vacations and travelling. Micropur Classic inactivates bacteria in water tanks and containers. It is ecologically friendly and keeps water free from germs, algae and odours. Silver ions preserve water for up to 6 months.

Technology: Silver ions
Contact Time: 2 hours
Form: Tablets
Shelf-life: 10 years
Application: For smaller amounts of water (e.g. water bottles)

wonder what silver ion technology does

.

Billy,

I agree 100% and thanks for that. All I am saying is there is no harm in breaking a tablet in 2 and then rinsing your hands.

If it were that volatile and dangerous they wouldnt sell it for this purpose.

Like everything common sense is the key.

I suppose you are right you can just rinse after.
I just figure it safest to drop a whole tab into a container right from the package without actually touching it.

Tha Aqua Mira liquid is great for controlled dosages. You use a number of drops of an A and B solution and mix it together before use. That makes it really potent. It turns a vivid yellow and it's ready to go. I decant the larger bottles into little dropper bottles for PSK and overnight hiking use to cut down on weight and space.
