Water purification tablets

I got my eyes on a Steripen. Next time out I'll run the water through my Katadyn Hiker then hit it with the Steripen. Maybe I'll keep some tablets for a backup.

I use the bleach method. Does the same function as the tablets but doesn't filter particles. 5-6 drops per quart. Leave for at least 30 mins. Longer if water is cold. I just filter it through a coffee filter. I carry it in an old Visine bottle appropriately labelled. Pretty much free compared to the tablets I bought ( Katadyn $15)

You could always go with the MSR Sweetwater Filter, it does it all.

A good filter plus chlorine, and MSR would like you to buy their chlorine.

MSR Sweetwater VIRALSTOP Replacement Bottle

MSR MSRs SweetWater Purifier Solution is a chlorine-based purifier solution that provides simple and fast virus protection when used in conjunction with the SweetWater Microfilter.

Or you could buy another good filter and a bottle of unscented bleach.

I always keep water tablets as a back-up, but I use the Katadyn Vario as my primary source of water purification. After filtering the water, I then boil it. I have been using this system since last summer on my outdoor ventures and have had no ill effects so far. I was previously using the Hiker Pro, but upgraded to the Vario last year. Mainly due to the ceramic "pre-filter" feature which works quite well when the water quality is very poor. It definitely extends the life of the primary charcoal filter. In the "longer life" setting, the Vario will pump 1 quart per minute and is good for 500 gallons before replacement of the carbon cartridge is necessary. It also has a "faster flow" setting. It bypasses the ceramic filter and flows 2 quarts per minute, however I never use this setting as it sort of defeats the purpose of owning the Vario over the Hiker Pro model.

I've got the Steripen. I asked about the tablets because it is a required piece of gear for an upcoming survival course I'm taking. I went ahead and bought new tabs. They are a good back up to a filter.

I think he's talking about the Aquamira Frontier Filter Emergency Straw Filter. It filters up to 20 Gallons, runs $10 or so online. It gets good reviews on there. I'm planning on getting a couple of them.

It won't last as long as the other, but it's smaller, lighter and filters enough for most uses. How good is the filter?

Yup this is it. But the other one looks cool too.

How much $ does that Lifestraw go for?

The aquamira site states that it's certified to remove 99.9% of crypto and giardia. It's a filter and not a purifier though. I'd probably still treat the water. Better to be safe than sorry.

There is a "pro" version of the aquamira frontier straw thing... replacable prefilter, says it is good for 50 gallons. Has a cap that protects the mouthpiece, and a bite valve that is removable to turn it into a screw-on drip filter for small openings (like on 20oz. bottles or platypus bottles). Says it can attach to a water bladder straw as well.

Goes for around $20 most places.
