Water Purification?

I haven't seen this topic for some time. I'm beginning to plan shorter hiking trips for this Fall and wanted to know what all of you do for water purification. The typical scenario will be small pack, 3-5 days using 32oz. Nalgenes or a 1lt. Camelback. In the past I've used the time tested iodine droplets or pills, taste cancel drops, and then added a powder drink mix to make it go down easier (PowerAde, etc.).

I'd love to know what the rest of you use: pumps, drops, straws, boiling, etc.

I've used a Katadyn filter system for years with good results. When traveling on glacier or winter camping, we pre-melt the snow with a stove and then pump it through the filter. That way we save on fuel by not having to bring water to full boil. Keep the pills and drops for your bug out bag and get yourself a good filter.

I have one of the katadyn hiker model filters

I've boiled water too for years.

I like not having to carry a lot of water in places where I know the streams and seeps and just stopping with the filter for instant good water:thumbup:

For a couple days, I like a wide-mouth Nalgene (Guyot) as they are easier to fill than a bladder and at 32 oz. very easy to drop in a Micro Pur tab which has no taste unless the water is extremely clean and then you do taste a slight chemical, put not close to iodine. Here is some good info.

I used to use a First Need pump filter that I bought almost 20 years ago. It works great but in an effort to pare down the weight of my pack, I've been using iodine tablets or Aquamira liquid drops. Never had a case of giardia when using some form of treatment in New York's Adirondack mountains.
