Waterproof and fire retardant hat

So, I went camping over the weekend and I wore my Tilley LTM6 Airflo hat. When I got home, I saw that there was a penny sized hole in the crown. It is obviously a burn hole from an ember from my fire. I am well and truly annoyed by this. It's an expensive hat that is no longer waterproof and is now a bit useless.

Do any of you guys have a recommendation for a hat that is waterproof and not prone to melting?

Sorry Chinpo, no recommendations, but why not sew on a patch and treat it with some waterproofing? It'll give the Tilley some character! :)

That's a good idea Doc. I'll try to find some olive coloured material to patch it.
I love that hat:(

Those are exactly what I'm looking for! I could also use them to hammer in my tent pegs and baton wood.

An aluminum hardhat might be a better choice and you could cook with it ,makes a great pot !!

I intended to order one of these for bumming around the woods but never got around to it. If I remember correctly someone posted up the link in this forum.

They look like some pretty tough hats.

I remember that thread. Thanks for the site link, I'll check it out.

On my phone so I can't do a link but if it helps, I start a thread about them. I don't know if it's "the" thread or not though.

I think I'm gonna ask Santa for one of these for Christmas.

I was looking into the Real Deal Hats too, If nothing else, they look easy to patch, and it would stay in character with the hat, too.

That's what I do! :D

Works great. You can find old aluminum hardhats on the 'bay for next to nothing. Mine cost me $15, including shipping. :D

I thought all Tilley hats were of natural materials so I was surprised to find that one is nylon with a lump of foam in the roof.

Strikes me you'll have the same type of choices with hats that you do with other clothing when it comes to melt hazards. Waxed fabric is the obvious - tweed or the like gonna be warm - leather perhaps a bit gimp and probably not great wet - no idea about silk.

Those Brazil hats appeal to me. I'd probably Nikwax one of those.

Yeah these are they but the specific product I had in mind is this

I'm a bit of a fan of all their stuff actually. They're behind the Paramo clothing range too. Great kit, good bloke. I've been out to their place a few times now.

Nifty pot, but aren't those old aluminum hardhats galvanized? Or, am I thinking of steel?

Stetsons don't burn without effort, and they'll keep the rain off.

The natural fabric tilleys - e.g. hemp ones, are much more burn resistant. Nylon is just like that. At least you weren't wearing a $300 Gortex 3ply coat when it happened. Another thing to consider is a crushable wool hat. They are pretty waterproof and wool is quite fire resistant.
