Waterproofing Kit Tin

I,ve been following the survival kit threads and looking for feedback on how the kits using "tins" are being waterproofed.
In the past all I have done is wrapped electrical tape around the tin over the join but on really hot days the tape goes soft and can allow water in.
Now I've been using a bead of silicone around the lid which is a good way of waterproofing although is a once off thing and needs to be replaced.
I've thought about rubber tube stretched over the join although I'm not very confident with the seal.
Just looking for ideas or sharing solutions.

I put mine in a zip lock bag and it's seemed to work quite well. I can use the bag for other things if needed and it is resealable which allows me to access what is in the tin as much as I want.

I wouldn't really want ot seal mine in a way that would not be reasable while out and about.

Yea I dont like not being able to reseal the tin so I go back to covering with layers of tape. Unfortunately zip lock bags seem to get holes in them easily. I have seen the heavy duty ones for maps and wallets when you go fishing but that compromises the size of the tin.

you might try a ranger band made from a motorcycle tire...they are rather large around and might fit an altoids tin nicely.

i don't have one handy anymore, or else i would tell you more certainly.

myright .. yea i've been looking at the otterbox and pelican box's. Good options.

siguy ... yep unfortunately the rubber stretches and gets some sort of memory and not really sealing tight. Allows the capillary action thing.

I don't worry about it. The tin is in an inside pocket and little in there can't be dried out in any event.

Cool gadgetgeek ... thinking inside the square :) I have sort of done that but not really in the context you meant it. Definately an option, only tricky bit is getting everything to go in its correct spot before kit is loaded.
At present I have different sections in little bags and then loaded into the tin in case its raining when I open it.

Back when man was using animal skins for their tin cans... they used oiled waterproofed skins to wrap individual bundles, then wrapped the bundles together inside another oiled skin. Jump forward a few thousand years and we can use heavy duty cling wrap, or even very thin vinyl sheeting to wrap individual bundles and then put them inside the tin can. The can protects the wrappings, the flex of the cling wrap gives you full use of the space, you only need to open the bundles you need at the time, and the rest stay dry. :D
