• Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! I hope that you all have something to be grateful for this year and for many years to come
  • America has reached 250 years, and I am grateful to be here, in the best country in the world. Thank every one of you who helps make this country a better place, those who have gone before and risked it all, and those who've paid the ultimate price to make the United States what we are today.

Happy Birthday America! Let Freedom Ring for all time!

Waterstone Starter Recommendations

SiC on glass tends to be very messy and IMO works best on stones below 300 grit. For higher grit stones you need finer powder or you gouge the stone and the process seems to really slow down when using a finer powder. Diamond plates, especially the Atoma lap finer stone quickly and efficiently making it a much better choice.

The Atoma plates also fit in the Shapton Stone Holder ;)

One last question.... Can you compare the glass vs the pro shaptons? You mentioned you would get the pros.... but why? Why not the glass?

Thanks!

Why not a Taidea 1 k, and combination 3/8k. That would be an economical started kit for waterstones, enough to bring an edge to shaving sharp for a fraction of the cost. I personally own the 3/8k and it leaves beauty edges on kitchen or outdoor knives. All these stones can be had on Amazon or eBay cheaply. The op wanted starter recommendations, this is not a bad one.

You could even lap them on 220 grit sandpaper on glass or a counter top. No need for an expensive lapping stone right out the gate.

Cheers
