I saw a thread where someone "waved" his knife by attaching a zip tie to the blade. Brilliant and at a cost much cheaper than air. Any other tips on how to accomplish this? Anyone else tinker with their blades?

the zip tie is a good way to do it. A lot of people do that to spydercos and other knives with the opening hole. I tried and and it works, but it tears up your pockets and I don't really have a use for the wave.

If you really like the wave and want to wave a knife, some people grind away the metal in front of the hole and make the hole into a really big wave.

Ziptie is pretty unreliable depends on how your pocket is shaped. On my cargo shorts the pocket is slanted down and it works everytime like a dream, but on my jeans the pocket is flat and ziptie works 50% of the time at best.

Pardon my ignorance but I have seen "wave" mentioned a few times on the forums. What is the "wave"?

Thanks,

I first saw a zip tie or maybe it was a stiff wire at the time placed in a Spyderco opening hole when I was still on active duty in the Air Force back in the early 80s. The knife was a Spyderco Worker as I recall. Whatever it was it was an all stainless Spyderco I do remember that and I separated from the AF in May of 1984 so it was before that or around then.

I remember that before too long after a guy in the ER starting using that in his knife that it went all around the medical center and in no time flat like every 20 something year old around had one doing the same thing.

Based on this it appears that Waving open the folding knife was not a new idea when Ernie Emerson patented it. No else thought to do so I guess. Go figure. I know on several occasions after the advent of the thumb stud that I accidentally opened folders of my own this way also. I'm sure Ernie thought it was his own original concept but as I understand it he discovered it quite by accident himself, probably much as I did and others have.

The concept of a tie of some kind in the hole has been around for a while though. I can testify to that as can my wife and others stationed at Scott AFB in the early 80s I'm sure.

As others have mentioned, a zip-tie works. I myself have grinded/dremeled my blade for a more reliable and permanent approach. I have a thread I posted a while back on this forum.
