wave knives - yeah or neah ?

You can do that 'pop' with a waved knife as it is deployed ...I don't understand why people consider the wave unreliable when you still have the hole/disc/stud as well as the option of inertial opening.
You raise some good points, s.c. Understand I'm not a fanatic about this ... I would guess that some might argue that a wave feature risks snagging when you draw intending to do a pop. But certainly you'd find that out soon enough when practicing.

Plus even the most reliable opening method can fail, which makes it important to have some kind of thumbhole, stud or other way of getting that blade open with only one hand if either wave or pop should fail.

Just thought I'd mention, IMO one of very best very choices for a "popping" knife, in fact one of the best choices for a self-defense folder generally, is the Byrd Cara Cara, especially the lightweight. A lot of lockbacks won't pop easily or at all, but the FRN Cara Cara is an exception, opening just as easily as many "loose" liner locks and in many cases being a safer lock mechanism. Seems to me the Byrd comet hole would readily lend itself to a wave mod as well.

I enjoy both waved and non-waved knives. The wave feature is fun sometimes. There have been times when the knife open when I didn't want it to and times when didn't open when I wanted it to. The Spyderco waved knives can be used to open bottles. I enjoy having a waved Spyderco around friends during games and fights. It's going to come down to your preference.

You're in San Jose, there's a great knife shop called "Stevens Creek Surplus" pretty close to Santana Row. I think they might have a Spyderco Waved Endura you can check out. If not there, there's a place in SF (Pier 39) called "We Be Knives" that definitely has one you can play with. And while you're in the city, check out Tad Gear. They have a bunch of waved Emersons over there. One of the best things about going to Tad Gear is that it's one of the few places where there are guys who know more about knives than myself. They know their stuff over there.

Oh yeah, if you have a tip up carry Spyderco knife, you can try the zip tie trick and make a home made version of the wave and see for yourself if you like it. If you don't know what the "zip tie" thing is. Ask and plenty of people will be willing to explain it for you.

Just edited for a correction: Tad Gear has Waved Spydercos also. So no need to make 2 separate trips, unless you want to.

Waved knives take away alot of the blade like on a waved endura for instance.

Only for stabbing, and your thumb would stop the blade about there anyway if you employ saber grip or a variation thereof.
For slicing, it does nothing either way.
Well, it might take away a half inch of penetration, on further thought, but that shouldn't make much difference in most any circumstance.

i have both waved and unwaved. tell you honestly i never use the wave feature to open the knife with. the wave feature does make a great bottle opener though!!

I have not gotten one yet. I am going to hold off until they combine the wave with assisted opening. I don't have one of those yet either.

i havent heard EKI was gonna do that or was even considering it, i dont really think it would be practical, or neccesary.

if ya are waiting on that to happen dont hold your breath lol.

Wow, so many norcal people in this thread. San Jose checking in.

Steven's Creek Surplus is cool, but also check out Armageddon at Oakridge mall, they have good selection.

You are right. I am not holding my breath. I guess I don't have much of a use for either a wave or an AO. A thumb stud or hole is more than enough for me.
