Can't decide, waved rescue or Assist I, I want the wave but I like all the other gadgets on the Assist. HELP!

what are you going to use it for? if you are planning on carrying the knife in your pocket i'd say the wave rescue. the handle on the assist while it feels great in your hand would probably feel bulky in your pocket.

I love the Rescue. I feel it is a lot of knife in a compact and light weight package. I have seen the new Waved ones and they look great. I am waiting on the Assist though for a car knife. Sal said something about making an orange Assist, I will buy one once they pop up for sale.

I got an Assist about a month ago and I have carried it every day since. I hardly notice it in my pocket and I have already used it to cut some rope using the method described on the Spyderco site and it works great. My vote would be for the Assist.

For practical Emergency use I would go for a Waved knife without a doubt. I would not even think of an assisted opener or an auto without safeties they can easily pop open in your pocket and they niether as simple, reliable, or fast when drawing from your pocket as a waved knife my opinion

oh oops I thought you meant assisted opener I do like the looks of the assist better it also looks very practical can this be waved by it's swedge on the top of the thumb hole ???? I think the wave rescue will deploy much faster though despite it's looks

My thoughts on this matter:
I want the wave because:
I have no serrated spyderco
I have no waved spyderco
I have no 'big' spyderco (all my blades are Native or smaller)
I like the choil +under jimping
I like that it's flat

I Dislike the wave because
Fully serrated sounds like a PIA to sharpen (yes I know I said I wanted serrates)
I already have that kind of texturing and want to learn more about what types of handles I like
It's a lot like the spydercos I already have used (Tasman, Native, Cento4, Endura 3) and want to try something new
--------------
I want the assist because:
see serrated reason
I want to try a wire clip
I like the robust tip
I like the gadgetry factor
I like the idea of molding
I also like the small straight part at the tip as well

I DISLIKE the assist because:
It looks a little robocop for me
I wonder about the pocket size (I carry a Para somedays, is it more noticeable than that?)
No finger choil

the assist comes in very handy when you need to cut/strip cable in a pinch. The serrations also come in very handy when cutting carpet for coverings cable runs.

the "cobra hood" also serves as a crude wave.

So you would recommend it for our field? Have you used the rescue though? I like hearing your thoughts because I know you know exactly what I'll be using it for, without having to explain it...

Thanks,
Phil

here are a couple of pics i took for a thread on the spyderco forum. the side by side is the big manix with the assist. hope they help.

I've never used the rescue, but I took a good hard look at it when I got the assist. I chose the assist because I thought with the catch on the tip there would be less of a chance of it slipping while I'm cutting tie line and flying at my face (cuz I'm cutting away from the cable). I used to use a karambit, but as you know, actors and directors can be sensitive sheeple. The tip also helps trying to pull apart tape that has bunched up and stuck together around a cable.

In my experience the assist has saved the day when I've had to rewire a plug up in the air. you can nest the cable in the grooves in the handle, close the blade, twist cable in the blade untill you've almost cut through the rubber, and then pull it off whit your multitool. The scissor action also gives you plenty of leverage when you dont have cable cutters handy.

One big plus for either model, is that you know you're going to smack the edge against the pipe sooner or later, and thanks to the serrations it doesn't matter

Ah, thank you very much, this is definitely starting to look like a winner to me!

I should add that if you can get cable cutters, do. cutting with the blade can be ugly if you're not careful.

I definitely agree, though it is funny to watch your fellow electricians chew through cable with their AWESOME gerbers or S & W's. :)

Well guys my wallet just voted, the assist is on its way from wildeals... Thank you all very much for the input :)
