Anyone familiar with the work of Wayne Clay, a maker from Tennessee? There was a picture of a Big Bear style subhilt he did in Tactical Knives a while back and it was very nice looking. Anyone else making Loveless style subhilts? Thanks.

I have met Mr. Clay, handled his knives and liked them. I just have not used one.

Steve Johnson makes a fine Loveless style subhilt. David Broadwell makes one although not necessarily Loveless style. Those are my two favorites as far as subhilts go, but there are many other folks doing some awesome work.

I wonder if Geno or Larry Harley are doing any.

AK,

As Gus mentioned Steve Johnson who studided with Lovless makes perhaps the best Loveless style SHF.

George Herron and Buster Warenski are two more.

In Germany: DF Kressler (who does the best integral version of this particular knife).

In Japan: Yoshihito Aida

Gus mentioned David Broadwell who IMHO makes the best SHF in the world. I say this because of Davids ability to use multiple materials, his desgin aptitude and his pricing. These along with his ability to make one of the finest fixed blades available by any maker have put him in that position.

Walter Brend's Model 1 with a SH is an excellent example of a SHF.

Doug Casteel: Anything Doug makes is awesome.

Steve Rapp: Not necessarily a Loveless Style SHF, but his are about as good as it gets.

John M. Smith: John made a few for me in Damascus and Jade that were incredible.

Rob Simoinich: First knife I ever bought from Rob was a Loveless Style SHF.

Schuyler Lovestrand: He has mastered the difficulty of the SHF.

Jim Siska: All of his knives are exceptional and an exceptional value.

Mike Sakamar: Although he hasn't made many lately, he makes a very good SHF.

Bob Papp: Made several different SHF's very nice.

Rick Genovese: Mostly known for folders, but makes an excellent Loveless Style SHF.

W.W. Cronk: Incredible, but big bucks!

Bill Luckett: Suprlative deep hollow grinding and everything on his sub-hilts is dead on.

Other makers to check out:

Roy Genge
Hank Kubaiko

The SHF, especially those with an exposed tang are prehaps the most difficult fixed blade to make. This is due the joint between the tang and the sub-hilt. This is the first place to look for extra "material" that should not be there. Also, to make sure all 8 corners (4 on top and 4 on the bottom)match perfectly.

So if you don't have $17,000 - $25,000.00 lying around for a Loveless. You may want to look into one by any of the aforementioned makers.

Not only will they be less expensive, they will feature a much higher quality.

Wow, Thanks for all the information. Should keep me busy looking these guys up. Any thoughts on W.C. Davis' knives. Seems like i saw a couple of Loveless style fighters he did a while back. Thanks.

AK,

Yes, Bill makes has a very nice version of a Loveless style SHF.

Also, I forgot Joe Kious, but I don't think he makes them any more.

Also, Pat Crawford makes a great SHF.

Les' list is a who's who in subhilt fighters.
Thanks Les! Anyone who puts together a set from that list would have a set of the best.

We are very fortunate to have you here.

I have not heard of Roy Genge looks like I need too.

P.S. Glad to see Joe Kious mentioned also.

We do not talk much about him, but in short I have never seen one of his knives (older or current - fixed or folder) that was not exquisite in every facit of the art of knifemaking.

Gus,

Thanks for the compliment.

Forgot a couple more.

One of the first really nice Loveless Style SHF's I could afford was made by Kent Draper.

Several of Kent's knives are now seen around on different sites.

Also, Dennis Friedly.

I have actually owned a SHF by W.D. Pease as well.

Roger Russell (who worked with Rod Chappel) did a few very nice SHF's.

I had a chance but passed on (to my knowledge) Harvey Dean's only SHF.

Also, Willie Rigney (can't belive I forgot him). Willie did/does awesome work.

Pieter Grey out of South Africa.

Another maker out of Australia (can't think of his name) it will come to me.

Im sure some others will come to me as well.

Here's a couple more:

Ricardo Velarde, Loveless style, integral sub- hilts. Just got a Stag "hide-out" model.

Frank Dilluvio makes some nice ones. The Stinger is pretty neat. I think Mr Doggett did his site.

I'm lucky to have Rapp and it is pretty awesome!!
