has anyone seen the scene in the newer James Bond movie with the parkour and the guy wearing the backpack doing all kinds of rolls and falls on whatever is in his backpack?

clicky not the best quality but you get the point...

awesome scene, but it brings to mind a question for me, and its something i've been trying to figure out since i saw the movie and have spent quite a bit of time carrying stuff around on my back...

how do i crushproof gear in my pack without taking up alot of space, adding alot of weight, and making the pack uncomfortable to wear?

i have thought of two solutions...
1. pack everything in otter boxes and tupperwear containers inside my pack, and pad the back with extra clothes etc.
2. buy all indestructible gear that can't possibly be harmed by falling on it and rolling around on it.

i really want to get my gear to a bare minimum for camping and also i want to have a bag of minimum gear for sporting (biking, trail running, etc). i want light weight but i don't want to be afraid to get down and dirty because i could damage any of my gear.

any suggestions for making my gear crushproof without adding alot of weight or bulk?

What kind of gear are you thinking of crushproofing??? Im also afraid that you might end up with alot more weight then its worth it..

Pelican case with pick and pluck foam.

waterproof, crushproof, mud/dirt/dust proof.

nuff said.

Not all item needs elaborate protection.
Maybe the most (and only) delicate equipment I carry is a camera, for which
various shock absorbing coverings are available.
Some of them are waterproof. Quite useful.

Choosing a tough one needs less careful handling is better.

Depends on the gear. I usually roll my camera in a shirt and tuck it into my pack. I have dropped the pack, had it roll off a ledge, off the gate of my truck etc. without any problems. Generally the gear I carry does not require a high degree of "crush-proofness". Maybe for river rafting or the like . . .

hmm...i guess food is a major concern for me, electronics...

maybe i'm just being paranoid.

For stuff like cameras get an Otterbox or a Pelican case.

I wouldn't worry myself too much about breaking stuff. I'm renowned for jettisoning my backpack while climbing. Sometimes the pack is in the way or I just don't feel like carrying it. Off the cliff it goes.

I'm not talking about pitching my pack off the top of El Cap. More like dropping it onto a ledge 10-20 feet below.

Otterboxes are heavy. Only crushproof what has to be.

I agree. Some of the items that worry me include the camera and water filter. I keep both in padded cases to keep bulk and weight down. I did a lot of traveling via helo and fixed wing in Iraq and your pack gets mauled when they toss it around, ratchet it down, it gets stepped on, sat on, thrown out to the tarmac or off the back of a 5-ton (6-8 foot drop). Most of my stuff was okay...biggest protection is packing your pack right...keep the fragile stuff surrounded by clothes, sleeping bag, etc. I used a couple of smaller Rubbermade boxes for stuff like my external hard-drive (tuff sucker!). Never had an issue despite the rough treatment they received.

Put a strap on a 5 gal bucket or even a smaller bucket or put a bucket on a light pack frame put a lid on it and it is water proof and should float this idea is siimular to a pack basket but cheaper and you can sit on it use it to haul water or for foraging out of your camp.

For food, I usually have a plastic bag inside my food bag that I can blow up a bit so it doesn't crush things like bread. It won't help if you put lots of stress on it, but it's an idea for you. My $0.02.
