Ways to test sharpness?

Yup, cutting TP like that is no problem. All my knives zip through that like butter.

Now just hold the edge of the tp between your thumb and index finger and let it dangle and try to push cut through that. That is what I was trying to do the whole time. I thought you guys had some serious insane edge going that no one has ever heard of to push cut free hanging TP..... lol.

So I can't cut TP like that, but I can easily slice through and push cut newspaper and phone book paper. How good of an edge is that? Be honest, I have thick skin. :)

Well, that sounds plenty sharp to me, way sharper then most people can get their knives (well, the onse that aren't on this forums, lol). I can't cut TP by free hanging it either. That is my whole point. I thought you guys were sitting here discussing how you can push cut free hanging TP. I was reading this amazed that you guys could get a knife so sharp. I say when you are whittling hair that is about as good as you need to get. That is where I stand right now, and that is all I need. Sounds like your knives are plenty sharp.

By the way, are you holding the TP like in the video? You aren't trying to free hang it and cut it are you. That is about near impossible.

Haha no I am gripping the TP and trying to slice down the middle, but still my knives aren't sharp enough. My tenacious with 8cr13Mov can slice about 1/4 of the way down then rips the rest ofthe way.

I guess I'm ok with that. I can fillet a hair, although it can't be free hanging either. I'm using the standard sharpmaker, then a ghetto strop using a belt and some red dremel polish paste. Maybe after I get the UF rods I'll get better results.

I've adopted the TP test as well. Didn't quite get my buddy's Benchmade in 154CM through a slice, but it was close (Edge Pro).

Nice to see others have demonstrated Ankerson's video benchmark :D

there are 4 ways to test the sharpness, I think:

1- Romantic way : Just turn the sharp edge up and drop some rose leafs to the knife from 1-2 feet high and try not to get mad for parachuting leafs. If the knife slices leafs with their own weight; it is unbelievably sharp ! :)

2- Erotic way : Once again turn the sharp edge up and borrow your lady's silk thong and drop it on the edge of the knife. Consider, it is not a parachute... If it slices.... :) Sorry...

3- Gluttonous way : Try to slice a mouldy or a stale tomato. If it slices without mashing, it is sharp enough for you to use it in the kitchen. Please, don't eat it...

4- Try to chip your finger nails without cracking 'em. If it works, it is sharp enough to win WW3.

How do yours do?

CrimsonTide, I thought you would know the best test is on a few War Eagle feathers

Ankerson, where can I see your list? I've bought my 710-1 after reading your posts, seeing your videos. Than I've ordered Edge Pro 4 to be able to sharpen my dull Benchmades.

How's Benchmades D2 in your experiance?
Thanks.

Haha you're right it's been staring me in the face this whole time! I don't hate Auburn, I just have to love the Tide by default since I'm a student. Maybe after the iron bowl I'll slice some feathers.

The next step after the TP slicing test is slicing through wet TP. Now that I'd really like to see.

If you really want to slice up some TP, try a straight razor. >:) It is a challenge to get a knife to slice through TP cleanly. I was successful doing this with my VG-10 Spyderco Calypso JR after some sharpening and stropping.
