Wd-40

Just thought I'd chime in.

I have a friend who used to work as a locksmith, and he told me that he would use WD-40 on locks all the time, not because it did a good job, but because it did a tolrable job and it was on hand. He told me that the lock would eventually gum up and would need another squirt.
I see WD-40 like a multitool, it does an ok job for many tasks.

If you really want to see heads explode, go to a bicycling forum and declare WD-40 a decent chain lube. Those guys start foaming at the mouth over such declarations.

Yeah, my dad would get sick and tired of my brother and I spraying it on our chains. The chain would look great for a couple of days but would eventually look worse than the day we sprayed it on. It is certainly a solvent that lubricates great for a short period of time. I don't know for sure, but I don't dispute the claim that it is a good protectant if left undisturbed.

imho WD works fine for cleaning blades and some rust protection but i can think of lotsa stuff better for pivots, rem-oil in the little plastic bottle ($1.49 at walmart) for one........

i have used WD for yrs on guns and stuff with nary a problem with gumming,

Where I work at we use WD40 by the 55 gallon drum. It is not used as a lubricant but as a solvent. The turbines I assemble require that I place a 9 ton shaft into a 15 ton gear box. The tolerances are so tight that some parts must be heated to fit properly. No lubricants are allowed but WD40 is ok to use as a solvent to clean the parts prior to fitting. In the long run WD40 lubricates about as good as spit.
I have had very good results on my knives and guns with CLP, EEZOX and TUF-GLIDE. I will be trying Miltec soon as it is highly recommended in many forums.

I use powdered graphite in folder pivots - bone dry, if a little messy at first...It also makes a great epoxy pigment when inlaying handles !

On knives, I use WD40 and mineral oil as a lube. I do have a new Endura, may have to apply a little CLP.

We use WD40 by the can full cleaning shotguns after a day of duck hunting. I used it all the time, like was previously said, it is a multi-tool. May not be the best for the task but good for a lot of tasks.

I have heard through 2 very reliable sources that WD-40 will varnish on metal over a period of time. I was never impressed with it's perceived properties of lubrication. Even back in the 70s when it first hit the markets I used a silicone spray lube called CRC.

Currently I use the following items for lubricating chores>> Slick 50 ONE LUBE, Militec, Tuf Glide, Break Free, and QMI PTFE products. I am currently looking forward to new products from the newer "nanotechnology".

I have had fairly good luck cleaning stuff with WD-40. But I haven't used it for lubricating anything for many years. Good Luck and keep us posted.
