"We few, we happy few..."

Carl those a mighty fine looking blades!
Got my attention too when you said DC. I live in MD. Would like to someday see a traditional knife people get together somewhere.

Join the club!

Dan and I have been trying to get some like minded folks together for an afternoon of crab pickin' and beer drinking, and chicken eying and coon fingering some pocket knives. (after wiping hands off well, to be sure!!!)

Dan, what hath you wrought?

Carl.

Just getting you back for sharing these great eateries with a fat guy that needs to stay the heck away from them!

:D

MThall, let's go man. I need some steamed crabs and steamed corn. I've been thinking about steamed corn, a little butter and piping hot JO or Old Bay taken right off the shell and applied to the corn. Nothin' better in the summertime.

Don't know about down near DC, but in Balmer, we eats the mustard! No deadman though...

Got that right! I'll come back down home to pick some crabs with you guys, for sure. :)

Carl, I envy your ability to operate with such a minimalist approach. At this point in my life, just as I'm still "too hotheaded to be a buddhist," I'm not quite ready to simplify that much... although it is an aspiration of mine as well.

I really think it's an age thing. It was a little bit of a startling wake up to realize how much closer to the end I am than to the beginning. Then after having three of our Friday morning breakfast club pass away in one winter, in just two months no less, leads me to closely examine my life and everything in it. I think the years lead me to a more zen like life than anything. Now, things are just things to me, while the people in my life have become the number one most important thing to me. That's why, even though it cost an arm and leg, I wanted as much of the family along on our Oregon summer vacation as possible. Stuff is just stuff. It took me most of a lifetime to learn what my old man knew all along. But then, he always was smarter than me.

But...disclaimer...it is nice to have nice stuff when you keep a minimum!:D

Meanwhile, come on down and pick some crabs with Dan and me!!

Carl.

Yeah, when you keep it to a minimum. I was looking through my collection last night, and decided I need to pare down again. Partly to replace $ that will be spent on a custom Zulu pattern. At least I can afford it right now.

C'mon and pick crabs and drink with us man. We will have fun. I foresee the Old Bay patina trick!

Jackknife

I'm curious, your Boy's knife has a spear-point blade. I've always associated you with knives with clip-point blades such as: Buck 301, 303, Peanut, Hartsook, Resolza. Any reason in particular you chose that shape? Change in philosophy or just what was available in ebony?

Well Robb, I've used my share of spear and other points. I went through a sodbuster stage years before I came to the computer. I usually dropped the point of my sodbusters a bit to make a spear out of them. And I always dropped the point of my Opinel's to a spear type point. But for the GEC, it came with the spear point when very generous member Dan, (silenthunterstudios) gifted it to me. And it has such a nice swedge, it isn't a real blunt point to begin with.

Carl.

I gotta rule out the first weekend of October, my sister is getting married that Saturday. If I survive the reception, we'll be having a huge party the following day. I hope to see that Monday, especially because I will be taking the day off!

I've been paring my collection down, waiting on the aforementioned custom Zulu. Found that I really only carry single blade slipjoints. Thinner and easier to carry (says the guy that carried large BM's, $pyd1es and $$$tr1der$).

Thanks for the quick reply jackknife. I usually prefer the acute point of a clip-point blade and most of my knives reflect this. On the other hand, I do like a good sodbuster for working in the yard. In the kitchen, I usually go for a spear point. There's something about that spear that just seems right for cutting cheese, sausage, fruits and vegetables. And of course spears are so much better for peanut butter.

It looks like you've got a nice patina going on that Boy's Knife. I bet it's seen food duty. :)
