Ok with all this talk of Bow Drill fires on the forum recently me and Pit Jr decided to give it a go.
I know we should have long since mastered this but somehow we never got round to it.

Anyways we gave it our best shot, although we were a little pushed for time today !
When after only about 5 mins we got smoke I started to wonder what all the fuss was about ! Surely within a few more minutes we would have fire, right ?

How wrong can you be, smoke was the best we could do today but we know that with a little more tinkering we will crack it !!!
We did scorch the drill quite a bit....

Good try! I've yet to this myself, I'm waiting for a little cooler weather.

Also, your a good father. I'm glad to see that you take the time to include your son in your life.

I would say you got close. The last time I did it it took about twenty minutes with only one short break. There was also a slight breeze going that helped alot. I had enough smoke that I was gaging but each time the breeze kicked up I saw a small micro-ember glow.

It's is great seeing kids learning some primitive skills. I would rather see them outside with a parent working a fire bow then rotting thier brain on video games.

LOL It's a start. I still haven't managed to get anything but smoke either when trying the bow and drill. I didn't even try it on my hike this weekend because it was so wet. . . It rained for most of the hike yesterday afternoon and through most of the night. Last night I used my mag block and a PJ cotton ball and this morning when I climbed out of my hammock I was stiff and lazy so I just flicked my bic.

Good father maybe, good husband ? Well you would have to ask Mrs Pit that one, you see this was her painting the decking ( she does all the painting !!!! ) while me and Jr were messin around with the Bow Drill !!!

If she is into doing all the painting then you better hang onto her. I hate painting and lawn mowing but my wife loves it.

When you get them trained right it's hard to think about having to start all over again.

HA! I can imagine it Mrs Pit labouring over painting in the sun while you and Pit jr waft smoke at her continuously.

Man, I'm going to send your wife a paint roller. She'll be painting all week with that little brush. :)

If you look behind her in the pic you will see a roller leant up which I had bought that day, she said she prefered to use the brush ????
