I got a 110 for Christmas that came from the bay. The box was wrong, I think, and I started thinking that there has never been a box thread to my recollection. So I now elicit the vast knowlegde and photo libraries of you Buck-a-roos to timeline the box progression. Thanks in advance.

Great idea Kev.

Inside some of those boxes were wood stands/displays.....I'd also like to see those added to the box thread.

WOW..I am anxious to see if anyone has 'Box' knowledge besides Joe H. My gut level guess is that boxes will be as equally or higher in difficult efforts to organize as knives are......especially older ones.....

I'll start with a few 110 boxes....since the 110 is my all time favorite. :)

The front two piece box is from the 1st version 110 made in 1964 and is approximately 6 1/4" long x 1 1/4" tall x 2 1/4" wide. The left rear two piece box came with a 1977 5th/6th 110 and the paper work is dated 10/76 and is approximately 6 1/4" long x 2" tall x 2 1/4" wide. The right rear one piece box came with a 1978-79 5th/7th 110 and is approximately 6 1/4" long x 2" tall x 2 1/4" wide.

These are the newer and larger one piece boxes. A 2010 110 came out of the one on the left and is approximately 10" long x 1 3/4" tall x 2 3/4" wide. The right one has a 2004 110 in it and the box is dated 2-23-2004 and is approximately 10" long x ! 3/4" tall x 2 3/4" wide.

I've been digging out a bunch of NIB knives but no pictures yet. It's going to be somewhat confusing and I'll bet we find overlap with the box types and styles as well as differences between models.

I've already found two 701X Broncos, one came in a two piece yellow/tan box, the other in the reddish brown one piece box. Right along side those two, I have a 110X that came in a dark brown with woodgrain one piece box.

I have one piece yellow/tan boxes with and without catalog numbers on them. Should be interesting.

Stumps - thanks for the photos! Great piece of Buck history!

I like 1964's style most. It reminds me current Opinel's packing boxes - simple paperboard color, one-color print, but you just want to keep the box :)

Does the date on the box represent date of manufacture or date it was packaged?

Here's the box for a 1986 112. I did a little looking and the "NEW" on the box is referring to the new radiused edges unless they are referring to the "even better edge". The other end has a "Special Offer" sticker that refers to the small package of Flitz that came with it.

It looks like the 1 1/4" tall two piece box changed to the 2" tall two piece box in 1967 according to Joe's data sheet.

I have quite a few NIB 1970 4th/1st through 1977 5th/6th 110's that all have the 2" tall two piece box, but I also have a few 1977 5th/6th (small three pins) that are NIB in the 2" tall one piece boxes. All of my 1978-79 5th/7th NIB knives I have are in the small 2" tall yellow boxes with black lettering.

My best guess is that Buck changed from the small two piece yellow box with black lettering for the 110's to the small one piece 2" tall box mid year in 1977.

I would have to go through my NIB 110's to try and figure out the newest one piece yellow box with black lettering and 2" tall that I have. I'm thinking it might have been around 1990, but I don't collect many 110's made after the four dots which ended approximately 1985. :)

This one is a little confusing to me given the supposed change in box size in '67. This one appears to be from '68 to '70 (3rd Ver./Var. 7) and according to the paperwork with it was purchased in '69 and came in the 1 1/4" tall box. The rocker rivet is brass and appears to me to be headed, but everything else fits. The knife has had some "customizing" done to it, but all the features are visible.

"Variation 7 (1968-1970)12
Stamp: BUCK, u.s.a., Inverted, Left hand, 440C steel.
Butt rivets: 1 visible on left side of rear bolster, 1 on right side.
Blade rivet: Visible on both sides of front bolsters.
Inlay rivets: 2 standard sized.
Rocker rivet: Brass, no head.
Sheath: Leather, black. B or C.
Packaging: 2 piece yellow box about 2” high. **"

This is the reason I always say "approximately" or when I talk about a year a knife was born I always shoot for the middle ground.

The only ones I have close to the year yours was born are three NIB 1970 4th/1st 110's from 1970 and they all have the 2" high two piece box.

Yours sold in early 1969, so it looks like there may have either been over runs in production of the 3rd/7th or the 1 1/4" tall boxes....or both. :)

The 1 1/4" high boxes did run into the early 3rd version 110's according to the data sheet, so your knife might only be one year off and I would say that's very probable.

I was just thinking there could be other complications with this knife.

I can't tell if this was ordered direct from Buck or came from a military (BX or PX) source.

If it came from a military source it could have been sitting in storage for a while or even be different stock from what was offered to civilian buyers.

Here are two Three-Dot 112 Finger Groove boxes and they are very different from each other.

One is a regular 112 box with a gold sticker to make it a Finger Groove box.

The legend has it that all Three-Dotters were made in 1980-81, but I believe some of the 112FGs came along as much as a couple of years after that.

I don't know which of these boxes might have come first.

This sure is a good idea for a sticky. I think it would help a lot of collectors out here.
Harold

Thats what I was thinking when I started this thread Harold:thumbup: I know there will be some oddities and overlaps, but I was hopin someone had one of each and could label, put in order and snap a few pics. Close/approximates would be good with me, at least to start.
