We need An Acronym for PJ Soaked Cotton Balls!

Wow, quite a few now. (e-mail sent eric)

So, we have TLC's, TC, FC, PCJB's GBF's Some good ones, how are we going to determin which one to use?

GBF gets my vote. It's descriptive, but not serious enough to sound like a stuffy technical term. Just the sort of thing I would expect outdoors enthusiasts to come up with.

Just to add to the mix - I've been calling them 'puffballs' for years now; 'puff' as in puff of smoke, from the fire.

All the best,

- Mike

PS I'm really amused by acronyms. My work has me dealing with the government regularly, and I've found that gov't agencies have an obsession with reducing everything to acronyms, to the point where some reports are just strings of capital letters. It's interesting to see this happen with wilderness and survival enthusiasts as well!

Just be sure to carry a sharp EDC, and have some GBFs in your BOB in case SHTF. ;)

Anyone else here carry the cotton dry and double/triple antibiotic ointment separate?

Less mess, mix it when ya need it, and also more flex of uses (first aid)

Fireballs??

Me, but I may try wrapping them in foil this weekend.

Hey GUys...

ThatmGuy...

Nice to see you..
gonna miss you at the Knobb this year...

Anyway, as far as plain cotton balls are concerned,, yes there are several people here that use them for this same method...

However,, I'm not a follower of that way of doing things..
Firekits are for fire and first aid kits are fro first aid...

When it comes to fire making supplies,, they have to be fool proof, bomb proof and Water proof...

You just don't get that with dry cotton balls...

Soak them in PJ with just a taste of parrafin and they are 150% waterproof, and will light with nearly any spark based method.

I understand what you guys are saying with the ointment and dry cotton balls, and thats all well and good, and if you do carry them, at least carry some PSCB's so if you do take a dunk, and the last drop of your pack popped the film canister your cotton balls were in,,,, at least you will have a 150% reliable method of lighting a warming fire...

I'm not against carrying dry cotton balls,, I just against carrrying Only dry cotton balls...

Hi Eric,

Even though I was one that indicated that I prefer to carry them seperately for flexibility's sake, I actually do keep a couple firestraws in my kit (and fatwood, for that matter) so I agree with your concern about waterproofness.

Personally I like GBF. One problem though. EDC, BOB, PSK are straight out acronyms. Even if you don't know what they mean, you can figure it out from the context. The whole purpose of an acronym is to make communication easier, so maybe CB&J, PSCB, PJCB, or PJSCB would be more universal and easier on the newbies.

Now, if what we are looking for is for some insider's lingo (only for those who are in the know) then GBF gets my vote.

I think is should be a TLA (Three Letter Acronym). I find trying to read CB&J, PSCB, PJCB, or PJSCB makes my brain ache and trying to pronounce them hurts my tongue.

I prefer GBF, but PJC and PJB are good (and more descriptive)

Rick.

Alright Normark. You started this bud, you finnish it. We can't decide and it's your thread. Pick one and I'll use it.

I agree Normark needs to get off his posterior and make a decision:D I agree with the "3" letter acronym limitation. I submitted the "CB&J" (cotton ball & jell) just because it reminds me of the infamous PB&J), but I do like the GBF (Great Balls of Fire)...that's my vote. We do need to put out an official title so we can start fixing our PSK lists to annotate "GBF's":D

Hey on a side note Normark, did you receive my subdued shoulder patch (shield with center start and three lightening bolts)? You did up a dual sheath system for my Ontario TAK (which is great by the way).

Hey GUys...

Ok...

How about PCB's (Petroleum Cotton Balls)??

I think that totally covers them pretty good, and keeps with the three letter acronym...

easy to remember..

There were alot of Great ideas though...

Appreciate All of your input into this...

Now someone has to go make a Wikipedia entry.. :)

All I know is that when I first started looking around here I thought PJs was some sort of a fire producing product you could buy for a survival situation.:)
