Yes we were all new here once and yea we all don't have 5,000+ posts under our belt, yea we've all asked stupid questions, the difference is that not all of us with only 10 post argue with people who've been in the industry/community for 10 or more years.

When your new to the community sometimes it's better to listen to what the elders have to say and not argue to show how much we think we know.

We could all learn from other people, like my Old Man used to say "...ya can always learn somethin' from everyone, even if it's not how to be an idiot..."

Sometimes a little research goes a long way in aidin' to ask an intelligent question.

The only thing that drives me crazy is when a new member asks a question that's been asked a million times before and when someone suggests usin' the search function they get all dumb like they don't know how, yet those same people can post with video attachments, links to spam sites and tons of pics yet still maintain that they don't know how to do a search.

Last gripe is when a new member responds to a post without readin' the OP or the bulk of the replies, I get some 20 page posts don't need to be read in their entirety but at least get the gist of the OP before replyin'.

As a last note, I like many of the old timers here welcome the new blood and the subsequent curiosity they bring with them, sometimes we get a little irritated when someone asks for advice and then proceed to argue with 99% of the concensus.

Noobies, newbies, what ever ya wanna call 'em will always be welcome here just respect the other peoples opinions here.

Great post. Me being a total knife noobie really appreciates it. I've had nothing but respect and help from the board members here. I thank you guys for helping me along on my way of becoming a knife-nut.

Yeah, I've been a member for years but started checking in more regularly a year or so ago. When I was first checking the forums more regularly the "best knife for under $20", "best knife for under $30", "best knife for under $40", "carbon vs. stainless", etc, etc, threads were quite interesting. Now they've been done to death for me. They still serve a function, it's my call whether or not to click on them, although I STILL think there should be a sticky called "best knife for under 1.-$20 2.-$30 3.-$40" etc, etc, formatted however.

I got drawn back to this forum by resurrecting a zombie thread on who knows what subject, a typical "newbie mistake". I did it the usual way by seeing info I was looking for in an internet search in the thread. I got a couple cries of "zombie" and maybe a graphic of one, but I also got some good responses as I remember, information I could not have gotten easily elsewhere.

People who resurrect a thread like that are actually paying a bit of a compliment to the forum by looking here for answers.

'Course, by looking on a forum for info you are going to get opinionated people at times. Sometimes the most opinionated are the most knowledgeable. Both newbies and "oldbies" need to realize it takes all kinds.
 
Great post. Needs to be a sticky here. Not ashamed to admit I too could use a good ole reminding from time to time.

Patience and good information are the ways that we gain new members to the knife community.

Without new members, and new blood, the knife culture will die.

Always greet folks with a smile, and firm handshake was what I was taught, I practice that same thing here.

I'm. A newbie here and I really am glad go see some people can be decent. I started a thread for a joke in w&c and was blasted almost immediately by a very high post member. I was told that since I am not a paying subscription member that essentially I have nothing to contribute. I accept that the warnings were clear, but what I got was completely outrageous. But what disappointed me the most was comments from other high post people here who followed along withis persons rants. As I have read other posts by these people they "appeared" helpful and friendly, but I have learned otherwise

Stick around for awhile, and you will fit in. Wear a leather jacket until your skin thickens a bit. Some places on BF are like Disneyland, some are like Mayberry, some are like Mortal Combat, and there is even a secret place where the bastids come to roost. You have to pay for to be abused in there.

PCL, there's no hard feeling at all over there. W&C is just a different animal. Start a thread about Zombies or politics over there and its not going to go well:p It seems harsh, but everyone is just kidding around.

I disagree with a lot of the people in this thread. If I was talking about knives with someone new to the subject in person, then being asked "newbie" questions would be completely understandable. But if you're on BladeForums, you're on the Internet, and the answer to any question a newbie might have is already out there. And it's both faster and more convenient to just google the question, rather than sit on here and wait for a reply. I don't really see how you can excuse it.

But there's one story from me, as a younger guy (I'm still 23) I find it VERY difficult to teach/break in someone older about blades. Mainly because there's too many myths about blades. the most hilarious thing (in my country) is this. There's this "belt katana" in which just a plain Zinc shaped like a katana, etched and engraved with silly markings (such as penguins, suns, stars, and the 'year of the making' it's just plain "1817" etched on the blade (not in the tang)) in which if sheath-ed can be used as a belt in your pants, and if you're needs to unsheath it it would be a superior katana that could cut off a nail... IF you had the correct inner energies or aura... heck, I've never knew someone has impregnated Viagras into blades -- I never knew it was existed yet at that time-- and this one is said to be owned by some super-general from Japan who'd KIA in the WW2. And it's offered at fantastic price at the highest 10 billion Rupiahs ---- 1 US dollars is 9.000 Rupiahs at average currency rate.

After reading all of this post, I think there is one thing that should be mentioned. Being a newbie on this forum does not necessarily mean you are a newbie to knives. Having a high post count does not make you an expert. I am a member of 7 gun, knife, bush craft related forums and do not post regularly but read most of them almost daily, yet I have owned, used and collected guns ans knives for over 40 years. Newbies often have a lot to offer.
 
Wow, thanks for the responses people.

To be honest with you, I never really expect a reply when I start a thread here, I guess I just don't figure that I have anything important or interesting enough to say to receive a response. I cetainly never imagined that a few personal thoughts that I posted late one night in the spur of the moment would result in a sticky. I truly feel honored :).

But this thread ain't about me. There are lots of good people on this forum, sure, things can get a little heated at times, but I think that even those of us who get a little surly once in a while (I include myself, I'm certainly not perfect) are still good people at heart. Personally, I consider myself to be an ongoing work in progress. Patience doesn't always come easy, sometimes we have to work on it.

This is a place designed for knife enthusiast and pros as well as newbies. Therefore, you always risk asking a question that might make those more experienced here roll their eyes. That does not excuse poor behavior, but it might shed some light as to why you get the occasional a-holery here. Any forum for anything will get that, just like the rest of life. I would guess most folks, as I do, don't look as join dates all that often. We look as what is posted.

A couple of tips, mostly from experience: 1. Use the search. Nothing irritates folks more that asking a question 50 other folks asked as well. 2. Expect folks to mirror your attitude. Post like an ahole (guilty once in a while), get treated like one. 3. Do research for facts before passionately defending something. The folks attacking it wil do theirs. Chill out, relax, sit back, and have fun. Be a good person, and you will attract good people. And there are a TON of good people here. The jerks are just louder. If you don't believe in folks here, search about JK knives. You'll get the point of what most of us are about.
 
The way I see it, if you have to resort to insults to win your argument, then you don't have a good argument in the first place.
