We were all new here once

I wonder?? Maybe it's because I won't pay money to this forum when I can go to any other forum and talk to members and buy, sell, and swap guns or knives for free?? And there is like a million different levels of membership on here. Basic, Gold, Platinum , Moderator, "SUPER" Moderator, whatever the hell that is, and who knows what else. So Mall Ninjas can just pay whatever they want and feel important on here. So if that's the case, I don't want to fit in with a bunch of poser, mall ninjas!!

You don’t need to pay them to buy a knife or to participate in the manufacturers forums. Mod isn’t a membership level, it’s a job description. Most participants use the term mall ninja as a derogatory description. Check it out.

Well there you go, the fools and their money can support this forum because I'm done with it!! I'm a serious collector and I thought this was a site for serious collectors. Apparently it is nothing more than a site for wannabe "mall ninjas" and whoever pays the most money to this site gets their say no matter their knowledge of knives or not!! Take this stupid ass, charge to be a big shot, forum and stick it!!

I've had enough of you continuously trashing Bladeforums, paying members and the Mod Staff... time for you to go.

I don’t think there are other sites for knife collectors as big or accessible as this one anymore! Not independents, anyway.

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

I think 99% of the membership here try to be friendly and helpful here. I’ve never seen someone legitimately trashed or abused for lack of knowledge or asking questions.

I have seen members try to correct a misinformed member or ask a member for their sources for info or opinions.

Where it immediately goes bad is when the new member gets defensive and immeadiately goes on the offensive and begins to attack the ones who are helping.

The new members coming in need to realize that with a membership as large as this, (327,842), this many threads, (1,390,257)and subsequent posts, (17,500,081) you’d be hard pressed to find any knife specific forum anywhere near this size, anywhere on the internet.

There are a few characters whom the mods typically have their hands full wrangling but most are contributing members with nothing but a desire to share and help promote the, (and I hate calling it this) hobby of knife collecting.

There are many like me who didn’t get “into” knives but using them as tool have accumulated many knives over nearly a half a century of use.

As for experts here? My Old Man used to tell me,”...if you gotta tell someone about how good/smart you are about something, you’re probably not. Again this place has way more knowledgeable, helpful people than not.

For the new members considering contributing either financially or with infomation, don’t be so fast to judge a forum by the actions of a few other members.

Finally, financial contributions post count or length of membership have no bearing on whether a mod can discipline an offending member regardless of longevity or noteriety. If you’re a troll or if you don’t respect the rules, you will be shown the way out and banned from the site.

I’ve seen members with thousands of posts and 10+ years as a member banned for the same infractions a new member might get. In fact the established member would get less leeway because they should know better.

Lastly, I’ve been here since before the beginning and in over 20 years I can’t recall a single banning that wasn’t warranted or wasn’t instigated by the offending member.

So in closing I ask all new members to be patient and stick around you won’t be sorry and if you have any problems with the membership or the moderation staff, who by the way are unpaid volunteers, (keep that in mind the next time you have to deal with a mod) dont immeadiately go public and trash the site and it’s members in public but take it to a PM, VM or just email them, the mods have always been accessible just keep in mind that like you they all have lives outside of BFC.

To all the new members and the ones considering becoming members, give us a chance, learn the rules of the forums and their subs. I’m sure if you give us a fair chance you’ll find like the majority that we are without a doubt the biggest, best and most informed site on everything sharp and pointy the average and not so average person carries, uses or collects.

Welcome to Blade Forums and enjoy.

Sorry I'm late to the party. Perhaps the type of discussion that some have engaged in for the last few pages would be better suited for the Site Feedback forum, or Whine & Cheese. Bringing any sort of negativity to this thread spoils the positive vibe here.

If people have complaints that they want to voice about this forum, General Discussion is not the place to do it, and neither is this thread.

My thanks to those who contribute in a positive way to this thread and take the time to welcome new members.

True on all accounts.
Yet the troll will troll wherever they go and the more inappropriate place the better the stage. All we can do is parry and press on.

I don't mean to be preachy, but those of us who have been here awhile know that sometimes newbies don't always receive much in the way of patience and understanding. Sometimes it's easy to jump on those who are new to knives, know less than we do, or simply have different tastes in knives. Sometimes criticism comes a little too easy on internet forums.

Remember that we were all new to knives once, we didn't know anything. And if we were lucky someone with a generous amount of patience and understanding was willing to take the time to teach us, even if it meant pushing their patience and understanding to the limit.

How many of us can say that every knife purchase we made was a smart one. How many of us at some point have bought a knife simply because we thought it was "cool", or "tactical", etc. How many of us have bought knives from questionable companies with silly marketing. I doubt that any here are perfect.

In my humble opinion, this forum should be about more than personal entertainment, it should also be a place to provide guidance to those who are new to this "hobby", even if that means exerting a bit more patience and understanding. After all, how would we want to be treated if we were new here? In the end, we can teach newbies a lot more with patience and understanding than with insults and criticism.

Of course, if you've been here a while then you better have thick skin, because you're fair game ;).

Just my thoughts.
Great post!
Chris

Hi, I'm Jason from WA and I'm new to the forum here...although I have been an occasional lurker for several years. I started collecting around '95, when I was 20 or so, and even after all that time I still have a ton to learn. So, I decided to pony up some cash as a contributing member, and get to know some fellow edge lovers. Everyone here seems really cool so far...and, after reading the last few pages I just cant resist the urge to say; I'm a Spiderco, Kai, Benchmade and Glock "fanboy". ;)

Hey Jason,
I myself have been lurking so to speek for awhile. I finally bit the bullet and became a contributing member myself. I consider myself a newb compared to many as I have only been coleecting a couple of years. I also seem to use my collected knives vs storing. As a long time collector I am curious about what is your go to EDC knife?
Chris

My EDC is a basic Spyderco Paramilitary 2 S30v...there is nothing special about it, I just like how light it is and how well it works. With my side arm and extra mag, I try to conserve extra weight where I can...even if it's just a few ounces.

Edit: Let me add this, there are people here with WAY more knowledge and experience than me, I bet if you post a thread in the General Discussion about EDC advice, you will get some really knowledgeable people chiming in...let me know if you do so I can follow the discussion.
