i have mastered a lot of skills of WSS and another one i want under my belt is how to tell the weather with out any tools, just signs for nature does any one have any links or tips they want to share?

many of these are in the form of rhymes:
"Red sky in morning, sailors take warning"
"Mackeral sky and rain is nigh" etc.
Most of this old tyme weather folk lore is actually mostly true. Older BSA manuals, Poor Richard's Almanac, and the Foxfire books are decent places to start looking.

I'm guessing that you are mostly concerned about predicting upcoming bad weather. Learning the cloud types, the prevailing winds in your area and what wind direction brings what type of weather, and animal behavior prior to storms will give you a great start in your next learning endeavour.

Great idea chabla. I'm about to sound like a total crack-pot here but bear with me.

One of the best I can remember (taught to me by my father) is when the leaves are upside down, you're more than likely getting rain.

This usually is the case with Maple trees. They tend to show the lighter, underside of the leaves when the conditions are right for a good downpour.

Another is paying attention to the birds. On large storm fronts the high pressure at the front of the storm will cause havoc with the insect world. You'll notice an increase in activity with certain species of birds when a high pressure system is moving in. Birds will feast on the insects that are caught up in it. Larger birds like Turkey Vultures will be covering distance quick as opposed to riding thermals.

High pressure systems will provide a "free ride" for birds that are on the move as they are usually followed by a low pressure cell. As you probably know, lows usually bring bad weather.

Sea Gulls tend to move inland when the conditions on the water are less than stable as well. Usually a sign of rough weather on the water.

HTH,
Chris

I know for me - smelling rain is a biggie. If it looks like it might rain and smells like wet sand outside - I know I have about an hour to get ready for a downpour.
