Web pages

Herman,
Very nice site. I'm sure Cougar would like your website too. I loved that braclet with the humpback whale on it. Nice, very nice.

UW Mitch,

Thank you, that bracelet was more work than a knife!

i try to make an interesting site and not so
bland but it does take a little longer to load some things. so what? if they like what they see, they will stay and look if not they will leave.

Hi Phil,

Everything you say is true. However, you can tell you don't work with knife makers on a daily basis! LOL

For what it's worth, the reason I don't turn off my computer sound is it serves numerous other functions besides helping dorks annoy me with music on their websites ... I don't wear earplugs, either; there are sounds in this world worth listening to, and I'm not willing to cripple either my computer or myself just for the dubious advantage of visiting those websites. I figure if the site was worth looking at it would have been designed differently -- I could be wrong about that, of course, and if I am I'll never find it out....

It's occured to me to design a search engine that eliminates from the database all websites with music that plays automatically, anything that blinks or moves gratuitously, any page where a giant image loads first so if the net is busy you're left looking at a blank screen for three minutes while you're waiting ... I'm trying to figure out how to write a bot that can detect numbers and high ascii characters used for letters....

I'm sure my aunt would have dropped me on my head as an infant if she could have found the time, but she was too busy practicing on a $19.95 K-Mart keyboard ... with seven fingers....

I agree that alot of sites suck.

But I am also willing to cut slack to many of the makers because they build thier own sites. It takes time to learn to make a good website just like it takes time to learn to grind strait.

I do agree that specs of the knives pictured should be on the page, eg price steel handle ect. After all, isnt that the whole point of a site?

Les,
I wish I did work with makers, I'd sweep the floors, for some of you guys.
In a lot of ways you folks are way ahead of the pack, when it comes to the web. My compliments to all who have taken even the first step. I know how intimidating it can be. There's still a lot of fear connected to the Internet, it's still in it's childhood, heck it's a six year old child. Nobody knows how big it's going to be, or which direction it will take. I do know that if you've started, and keep a close eye on it, you'll do fine.

Well Since I started the thread I will offer up some of my thoughts

Couger is right as far as Im concerned. THe music is some kind of digital facsimile which sounds awful at best and signifacantly slows down page load. Primary concern should be as with any business. Hit them fast and hard. get the product in the potential customers face as fast as possible. Anything that slows down SEEING the knives is a mistake.

No Music

No fifty animations on a page

No really large images on the front page
(Use thumbnails and links)

No fifteen paragraphs of personal description. I may want to know your background after I see something I like
(This can be linked to if I want that info)

No hippie generated backgrounds. Cant read anything and its hard on the eyes. Some people use textured backgrounds tastfully Some not.

Think about Font size and color. There were a bunch of pages that were really hard to live with and I have excellent vision.

Offer descriptions of your wares including price and other have to knows.

Make sure there is a clear link to email you.
(the only place an animation MAY be acceptable)
I have sometimes had to search for contact info. You want me to buy make it easy for me to find you.

Just so none of you makers think Im just talking I will state that I spent 800 at the NYCK show and have since spent another 400 on the knife exchange forum. ALL IN NOVEMBER!

Alex, that's exactly what we tell our clients, K.I.S.S., that seems to be what the Buyers are looking for. Forget the Bells and Whistles.

I just want to give a special thanks to UW Mitch and Kodiak PA and all the others that have pointed me to problems on my website recently. If it was not for those that bring problems to my attention, I would not know to fix them. Kodiak, I think I have the Spec Ops Bowie pic fixed. UW, I will fix the dark image problem today.

Thank you all,
