Specifically about adding links to other knife makers. My buddy is helping me put together a website. I asked for a links sections where I wanted to add links to friends and knife makers I admire. My question is, do you think I need to contact each person and ask for their permission? I'm usually overflowing with commonsense but this one has me stumped. That would be a pain and probably keep me from doing it. Then again, pretty much everyone I admire is right here on this forum so you could just speak up if you have a problem with it.

I'd really like to have a means to direct the 4 or 5 people who ever find my slice of the interweb to the websites of the people I look up to.

Thoughts on hunting down permission or just doing it and choking those out who complain?

Dude I'm flattered, seriously, you have my blessing:D

I'm not at your level of making as I just started, but I think anyone that you'd put up there would be flattered even the fiddler as its solely your site... but I'd have to say it wouldn't hurt to ask permission first, someone may just get all tripped up inside or something...

good on you though..

Most makers would love to have a link. By putting a link to a maker's site, you are not necessarily endorsing that site/maker, but offering an informational link to someone with similar interests.

I'm guessing that most makers who have a website would appreciate the added exposure, otherwise, they would not have a website and hope that "Google-Tron" would direct some traffic their way.

If a knife maker were to get "all tripped up" about it, then he/she not only lives in a glass house, but has the shades pulled down.

Robert, you and I are thinking similarly. If it weren't for BF's and Shoptalk I wouldn't even be making knives. I never could find anyone close and have too much ego to cold call someone and ask them if I can come apprentice under them. So I read the stickies, asked some questions and took my cordless drill, hacksaw and files and built a crappy knife. Now a few years later I have a small shop a couple grinders and soon a website to showcase my crappy knives that I can now build quicker. :D

It's not about outselling anyone to me, it's about showing respect to people I admire and look up to. Hell, I'd link everyone in this forum if I knew all their websites. I'd love nothing more than to send someone Jonny's way or Jame's way should they happen to stumble across my site. The more I type this out however the more I think I just need to ask. It's the right thing to do. Anyone wants their link up. Just say "I"!

PS if anyone wants to give some feedback on the site to this point it would be appreciated. There isn't a lot of context up yet but it's getting there.

I recently decided I wanted to build knives and closed my wood store. Instead of just deleting the store I reworded the website's main page and put a link to Marks store so the people searching for wood can find something good. I emailed Mark and told him what I was doing and explained I would remove it if he didnt like it , he thanked me for the link. I think contacting them is a good idea and the time it would take to send an email wouldnt be much more than the time it takes to add the link to your store.

I don't think most makers would have a problem with it, Michael. I've thought of doing the same thing on my site.

By the way.......are we gonna see you next week?? Hope you can make it at least for a day.

I have one hurdle in my way for next week. My youth baseball team is playing on the 12th. If we win we keep playing. All my talk about being accountable to your teammates and believing in something bigger than "self" goes out the window if coach takes off. I always wonder what these parents think to have a coach covered from head to toe in tattoos.

If we lose I'll be driving that direction. I should even have a Kephart ready by then.

As someone who makes my living selling my work I am grateful to anyone who links to my website, I have found out from customers that they found me from links pages on other people's websites a few times, I try to find out who was nice enough to link to my site and thank them (sometimes it is people who link to my site to try to show that they are cheaper at something than I am, it still works to my advantage, I don't sell cheap products I sell good honest handmade work that I personally make right here in Syracuse NY U*S*A so I still get sales from it)

I would be honored to be linked from your webpage, or from any other fine craftsperson's webpage

Page, that's what it's all about in my book. I'm not a custom maker and would never in a million years claim to be one. I build my 7 patterns. I make a handcrafted knife and if you don't like one of my 7 patterns then I don't know what to tell you. I have a sentence on my facebook page that says, if you're looking for a custom knife, send me a message on what you're looking for and I'm sure I can point you in the direction to someone who can build the knife of your dreams, because if it ain't one of my 7, it isn't me. I'd be proud to have an opportunity to to possibly hook someone up with a custom maker if that's what they're in the market for. I sent someone to Daniel because he asked me to make him a knife I don't make. Daniel does however.

Now I'm drinking beer so we're all in trouble. I'm going to start rambling before I eventually pass out. Move along folks, move along!

Yep, links are always welcomed. Or should be anyway.
Good luck with the website and post a link when it's online so we can offer advice, if need be.

Link away, Michael, but whatever you do, don't put the links in your sig!:eek:

I actually asked these guys about linking to them, I think I asked them all...anyway it is a short list so it was no big deal to me.

They are there because they have meant something personal to me early in this gig, whether they knew it or not. Even my wife knows who they all are. I bet she could sort them by their work.

I think the others have it right, and I wouldn't worry about it.

It's an honor to be thought of, and the way you're going about it shows class.

I don't think you will ever have anyone complain that you posted a link to their website.
But, I am always impressed by someone having the courtesy to ask. Spalted as an example.
Kind of like saying please and thank you. Not everyone does it but it makes a good impression when they do.

as an afterthought.
ALWAYS ask before using someone else's Logo or Images for the link.
