Week long hike, bringing one knife...

Clark County (Vegas area, until you get to AZ) prohibits a *concealed* knife with >3" blade.

if it's a folder, and the pocket clip is visible, that's not concealed. if it's in a pack/luggage, that probably won't be considered "concealed on your person".

i'm not aware of any strange knife laws in AZ

in AUGUST, it's stinkin' HOT. water, electrolyte replacement an water wil be your biggest concerns, not what blade you're carrying or how big it is.

an Izula or ESSE 3 should be fine for a fixed blade. for a folder, whatever sturdy folder or multitool you like for edc should be fine.

i've been past the Havasupai Falls, but never to them yet. but i've camped nearby. most of the area is DESERT, not "woods", but there are some areas with big trees at the higher elevations. i don't expect you'll be doing a lot of chopping.

if the MULE is your only Camelbak, i'd probably pack a Nalgene or two of water inside it, or perhaps Gatorade or whatever in the bottles @50% of normal strength and water in the bladder. if you had a HAWG that can take TWO bladders, i'd take that.

a Tilley or boonie hat will also be a very good idea. something with a full brim, not a "baseball cap". also shades and sunscreen.

and you want to start at dawn. and then be back at camp relaxing and hydrating in the mid day... or down at the falls.

pack water, not steel.

:)

Only wildlife I saw were ravens, flies, bees, canyon sheep tracks, some type of biting worm insect, and unleashed dogs (from the village). The dogs are a nuisance.

i've seen deer and elk near there. closer to the Grand Canyon Caverns tho

There have been accounts of young kids from the Reservation entering campgrounds and stealing food.

i saw that episode of The Brady Bunch!

I live in AZ, no knife laws to worry about, and I'd pack water before I packed a fixed blade if you're already bringing a knife. I've been up to that area and it's more for families, you'd be fine with your Ritter Grip.

But get water. It'll be wicked hot in August, also, maybe think about getting some long sleeve shirts to cover your skin. It'll be hot, but you'll be hotter from the sun contacting your skin more.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for all the advice. I know it will be hot, and I was wondering about the water. The M.U.L.E. will do 100 oz. (3L), and I do plan on having a Guyot for camp which I could also bring on the dayhikes if need be. The last thing I want to do is have to pack my big MSR MiniWorks everyday so I can pump water for the return trip. I have a Maxpedition 10x4, maybe I'll see if I can hook it onto the M.U.L.E. for 140 oz. of water (that's over a gallon!)

For steel, I'm thinking:

Ritter Grip and Victorinox Alox Farmer. I may throw in the Izula just because it fits into a pocket on the M.U.L.E. so well, but I kinda like the idea of only a blade or two.

Take a fixed blade with you. Even if not to use, you will feel better knowing you have one with you. Everytime I leave the house there is a fixed blade with me, and most of the time I end up actually using it. (If I am in the woods, I always end up using it)

Better to have and not need then to need and not have.

Sounds like you would be well enough equipped, I don't see a problem with what you are proposing to take.

a small fixed blade is all the knife I've ever needed for backpacking

I just got back from a week trip in NM and didn't feel I was missing anything only packing my WM1 (it made fuzz sticks, prepped food, opened packages and cleaned trout)

I've got it setup as "kit" and is worn around my neck, in the low likelihood I was separated from my pack, I'd probably fare OK w/ the knife/kit

Hate that saying

1 is fine. 2 or more and you are carrying to much weight and bulk
Yeah, I hate that saying too... especially when it turns out to be true!!!

The poster above took a WM1 on a trip to NM... I don't think taking a second WM1 (or a Mora clipper, or a favorite folder, or...) would add much weight or bulk... for me it would be worth it... but to each his own... :D

Awe crap... I never saw the WM1 (stands for "Woman" right?) from a side profile like that (and with such beautifully delicious scenery). Did you do the Orange G-10 scales yourself or do they come like that? That is a very nice looking knife and catch!

Since were posting pictures of fish, I'll show you my "after" picture from this weekend (the Pike was the only time I used my S1 or SAK, baked in tinfoil over coals for 45 minutes with butter where the guts used to be and salt/pepper on top. Pike is right up there with Mahi Mahi when done right):

What if you lose it ,or it fails... then what? NO KNIFE !
Sounds like a hunter going out with one bullet to save weight.
I would rather be carrying an extra couple of ounces in a spare knife.

I hate to say it, but that is the way of backpacking. If you packed spares of everything you NEED then you'd be carrying a pack on your front, and a pack on your back. Above my knife, I use my flashlight, camera, pot, stove, water purifier, water bottle, and boots a whole lot more. Save for some nasty water tablets, I don't bring spares of any of those, but I can improvise (lighter for flashlight, pot for water bottle and vice versa, fire for stove, etc.)

Now to make your point valid, I don't always carry a 1-1 spare, but I do always have a small SAK tucked away in my kit in case I do lose my knife and stuff needs cutting. It's amazing what a 2" blade can do for you when you need to cut some paracord, tarp, or fabric.

^ yeah I like Northerns too- liked them even better after I learned how to fillet out the y bones :)

no I wish I was that talented, Greg from LoneRiderGrips did it (flawless I might add)

yeah the WM-woman thing doesn't bother me much :D

I agree

Every flashlight forum, gun forum, knife forum,etc.. says the "2 is one" Mantra

I find more enjoyment in simplicity and packing light

since you have a sak and a Izula that really sounds Ideal and the 2 of them don't weight anything. the mora is a good Idea also if your worried about theft. my 2 favs for hiking are the H.E.S.T and sak farmer.
