Weekend deals for 8/22 -- Pix, M-43, Himalayan Survival Knife and Great Buys

HighDesertWalker, let us know what that thing tips the scales at when you get it. All this hypothesizing and calculating mean bugger all without a proper answer:D
I was making a new sheath for my 43 while Yangdu was posting yours. Pic's in a few days
moogoogaidan; only my 12" CAK is 3/8" my other 2 are 7/16" in the spine. I'd like to try something in the 18~20" range with around a 5/16" spine to see how it behaves at that length.

Hey oldschool, thanks for the pics and info, by the way! Your sheath looks like it's going to turn out to be a winner! I'm really curious about the sock method and will be contacting that leather shop shortly!

I'm really tempted to try 5/16" at 20" because i'd think it would be REALLY lively in my hand -- especially with the M43's curvaceousness! The only thing i'm worried about is decreasing its toughness when chopping. I don't know though, with how wide the M43's blade is (and 5/16" isn't anything to scoff at), i think i'll be fine. I think i'm getting a bit jaded with these 1/2" spined monsters to which i'm accustomed.

Nice score Bill!

Is is just what the beer mug Kami was thinking?

Let me make a M-43 at 43 oz?

Just playing :P

BTW, I'll be on vacation from Wed, Aug 25 through Wed, Sept 1, so I'll miss the arrival of my new M43. But I will inspect and photograph it as soon as I return and post the results on the forum. Enjoy your khukris!

That survival knife looks very clever indeed.
CS were fussing around their version of hollow handle...like how it can be used for a spear point etc.etc...untill someone mentioned that IF you brake the wood shaft inserted in the knife handle you may not be able to take it out. (their version is completely closed in front)
No such problems with the kamis design...to think that this handle/knife is hand forged from a single sheat of metal with only basic tools...it must have taken ages to do.

the CS ones are open as well BTW... they are more conical though which lends themselves to spear making better but I still like the HI one better since it is likely to hold a better edge. I just have to pick and choose for now until I can get my dental situation under control.

As far as I know...They (CS bushman) are only open at the back...not the front...which is what i was talking about.
I hope you get this tooth pain under control soon!

Dan, I own four of them, would you like pictures to prove what I am saying?

They are open on both ends. If you don't actually know, why argue?

Warty is correct on this one. Also, during a worst case scenario in which the staff breaks off perfectly at the beginning of the handle, you could probably treat it as you would a broken ax handle (if we're talking a survival situation): just bury the edge in the ground and burn out the wood with fire.

BTW am I correct in reading that the survival knife has yet to find an owner?

go for it... I think it is still available....

My shock was more in response to this not having sold yet considering a lot of people's earlier interest for one.

I was considering picking this up for awhile, but decided that the design isn't for me. I never was too big a fan of the bushman as I don't find myself needing to make a spear out of my knife all too often. This is not to say that I don't see it as practical feature (it would be great in a survival situation) - just that for general usage, I find a full-tang or hidden through-tang knife to be more comfortable. The fact that I have 3 knives on the way (Farm Knife, WW2 and GRS/BC) and am kind of broke doesn't help either :(

Cos I'm pretty sure I've seen one around the shops here.
May be just a local model...don't know...they are made in South Africa after all.
If i see it again will take a pic for your pleasure:D

unreal... yeah, they make different ones for different countries...

I will take the picture then I want your apology for making me do so. :)

What's the wrap on the survival?

Hope you guys don't mind but how does one actually attach it to a staff to make a spear? What keeps it on?

I'm really liking this one, but I've spent too much money on steel already. Would actually like it if it's differentially hardened and larger.
