Weekend deals for 9/12 -- Pix, Giant Chitlangi Bowie, Blems and Great Buys

Bawanna ill bring it by next time i go visit my sister in Washington. It might be slightly over the 4" limit though. Would be hard to hide that thing. Ill have to tie it up on my surfboard racks:D

It might be slightly over the 4" limit on blade width.

Seriously, when I first got mine it was the blade width (and weight), not the length, that made the biggest impression on me. It's a very graceful, curved blade, so it doesn't seem so long, but that massive width is another story. The photos don't do it justice. You have to hold it in your hands to fully appreciate it.

People have called it a short-sword, but it's really a giant knife, worthy of a Paul Bunyan.

That Gelbu is SO calling my name. I can pick out a Tirtha made blade at a glance. The man just has a way with steel that catches my eye.

Agreed. I just got my Ganga Ram by Tirtha in the mail today and it just sings to me. This is the sharpest one I've gotten yet. It is a beautiful piece. Massively thick at the spine but still shaving sharp! I'm not exaggerating, either. It really does shave my arm hair cleanly. I'm not brave enough to try it on my face. :D

18 inch 20 ounce Villager fit and finish Gelbu Special by Tirtha. Field sharp rig. Slight shrinkage of satisal wood handle around the white metal buttcap. Huge saving for first time HI Knife buyer at $95.

I would like to buy this Gelbu Special. This will be my first purchase from HI so hopefully I am doing this correctly. I will send an email also.

Hi, 666, welcome to the forum. It's the email to Yangdu that reserves a DOTD knife. The first email to Yangdo gets it.

Posting here is more a courtesy to other forumites, so people don't waste their time emailing for a knife that's already been claimed.

I hope you get it.

p.s.: Make sure to include your shipping address in your email to Yangdu. She will reply telling you if you got it, and the shipping charge (usually $15-20, depending on the size of the knife).

Thanks for the advice David; paid for and should be shipping out Monday.

Can't wait!

I like the Gelbu blade. Long strong lines on the spine contrast well with the smooth curves at the edge.
Maybe next month :)

She's from Colville. Wherever that is? She says it on a lake and they live right on the lake. sounds like a beautiful place.
You gots a sister in Washington? What part? Surfboard rack would work real fine I reckon. Whatever it takes.

Philll. I have been waiting for a big chopper to come along and had to watch that GRS and even another one go by because I wanted the 22" one or a 20" AK I was actually going to buy one next fri but may have to wait a few weeks now. I have a small wood stove I cut short sections of firewood with chainsaw but would be fun to split them with a knife...when my friends are over:cool: I noticed the giant chit is only 3/8 in thick so dont think ill be splitting firewood with it. I just love the beautifully fullered Chits and I cant wait to see it. I wonder how they temper the Bowies? Since they dont have a "belly" like a Khuk.

You can tell where the edge is hardened by running the chakma along it and feeling the difference in resistance.

It's really easier than you'd think! Try it out on one of your khuks that you know where the sweet spot is. With just a little bit of pressure you can feel the chakma cutting into the softer steel and then sliding right over the hardened spot.

Thats true. I have noticed. Also when you sharpen its very obvious. I have also noticed after you start wearing the mirror finish down to villager status you can see the hamon line very well. Will be interesting to see how they did this Giant Chitlangi.

Thanks phillll and ndoghouse. Can definitely feel a difference while sharping different sections but haven't really been able to quantify it. Could count number of strokes.
The Chakma I will try again. I think I'm just to careful with it. Maybe if I use it more frequently ill be more comfortable and can pay more attention.

I am very tempted to buy one of those sub-$200 portable RC hardness testers. Unfortunately, I am not as blessed as I would hope and cannot justify the cost. If anyone owns one of those, I request you to please post stats/data on HI blades. It will be good information for everyone.

Some of us could share the cost and then we mail the device around to whoever needs it next (if its not too heavy or big)
I would pay some part of it. If 10 of us agree it will be $20 per person.
I wouldn't want to pay more than $25 and then only if the measurement doesn't damage the blade.
(In my university when we tested Rockwell hardness it left ugly impressions in the steels)

This is an excellent suggestion; please count me in! I am no expert but AFAIK, the markings left should be no bigger than the pinhead (pun intended).

Mail came today! That triangle package again! This one was a little longer than usual:D

Beautifully fullered! I touched it up with 1500 and then 2000 grit for a few minutes and this bad boy shavin wiskers all the way down! Amazing... I picked up my 25" Siru just to wipe it down and it felt like Kagas Katne compared to this monster! One bad arse blade. Better pics later when I have time and light!

I had no idea you were so gosh darn good looking. An that blade looks sooooooo good on you. What a beautiful beast she is. Wowsa!

I see yarn, we got yarn too er the missus don't cha know?

Any body ever tell you ya look like Woody Harrelson? Naw.............................

I'm happy for you. The Giant found it's natural place, where it belongs.

I don't see any marks, has your wife seen it yet?:D Bet she took the pics huh?

Yep got to keep her in yarn while I sharpen my tools. Got a grand-baby coming in a week or so. Wife's gotta make caps mittens onsies n all that stuff! Ill just keep her in yarn and cut it when she needs it. I do think that giant Chitlangi found its rightful home! You got to see one of them in person! This one is not very blemy. Small hairline crack or two and few rough spots I've already cleaned up. Ill take some good pics of the blade in daylight tomorrow. Those pics don't do justice.
