find a product called "clearly calagel" - it's marvelous for that, poison ivy, flexxx crack, and other discomforts.

will they kill the chiggers? or just ease the itching?

and that should read "unhappy and itchy guy"

eases the itching (kills the itch, and anti-histimine), generally protects the skin (infections), and may annoy them and make them die.

better clean your sheets and anything you touched, ASAP

when i got home i immediately got out of my clothes and threw them in the wash
chiggers tend to burrow in, it probably just took me the this long for my body to notice and react to the bites, so i probably was bit yesterday and just not known it

but it probably wont hurt to be on the safe side huh?

wife is suggesting an old mississippi home remedy, something about rubbing the spots with bleach, which will just kill the little bastards outright
i've never tried this before, has anyone else?

the internet is your friend. google remedies...

spray your clothes and stuff with insecticides...

profit!

Handling Chigger Bites

There are several methods for handling chigger bites:

Topical anesthetic may work for short term relief of itching symptoms;
soaking the bite location in water with Epsom Salts can cause the chiggers to become detached from the skin;
A topical cream containing an antihistamine
Wiping the affected area with isopropyl alchohol may also remove some of the offending pests.

= =

clearly calagel is also good on other insect bites, poison ivy, and so forth. girls in my camps love the stuff. nasty bug bites, vanish! ah, soothing relief. i love it for horse fly and sweat bee bites.

thanks bladite
actually read the wiki article

good to learn they are harmless but annoying ;)

So Smitty, after the adventure, what were you and your buddy's thoughts on using each other's ESEE5 and BK2? Inquiring minds want to know.

well his was a RAT5 not RC5 or esee5. let me be clear

his RC5 was thinner, we both thought they were the same thickness till we put them side by side, the bk2 is noticibly thicker
his RC5 was lighter, goes with the above point. it was lighter and faster in the hand
my BK2 did in fact chop better, again obvious with the above points

we didnt actually do much knife work yesterday, mostly just went hiking
but i did handle it, it bet his RC5 does fine knife work about the same as my bk2

so i guess it depends on what you want, a slightly lighter knife which is lighter in the hand and on the hip (RC5) or a slightly heavier knife for chopping (bk2)

"chiggers tend to burrow in" You people are insane down there! ;) Again I'll stick with Moose, Bears, and the occaisional Wolf. Because they don't "burrow in" (yuk) and at least I can see them coming. :) J/k sorta ;)

I wish I could go 5 miles any direction to hit the woods. I'd be there all the time if I could.
Born grew up and lived in Cali for 35 years. On a whim we picked up and moved here to N. Idaho. Been here almost 16 years now and have loved every moment. Life is an adventure if you go for it. I figured I could always move back if I wanted to. you sound like the kind a guy that would enjoy living in or very near the woods.

heh, its just a lil insect that likes to latch on ..and feed on a little flesh tissue
but you'll survive, if a grizzy decides to latch on, your pretty screwed :P

per the cites, chiggers apparently are incapable of actually burrowing IN... they latch on just like a tick, and if you frequently wipe them off with a rough cloth, they even fail to do that... they cannot crawl into hair follicles or pores either.

since they liquify your flesh to feed, which produces longer term itching that must be dealt with *and* leave their mouth parts behind when scraped off, you've got what amounts to fiberglass-itch in your skin... that's what you're feeling after the bodies of the beasts are long gone.

best way to deal with that is to basically "wax" the area, and strip out the bits as best you can, then apply something like magical Calagel to numb and reduce inflammation.

oh, and some spirits. best taken internally.

skip the bleach and nail polish.

for SCIENCE!

holy hell, i am much more bit up than i realized when i mentioned this yesterday morning
i am itching so bad i am up at 4:30am, had to reapply some of this Caladryl (i misremembered your suggestion bladite, but its kinda the same kind of stuff)

i did not realize just how badly i have been messed up. up both legs, behind the knees and even in my belly button, this is truly been a miserable day (and worse evening)

it could be worse, was doing hiking and some walking trail works last summer and didnt realize how bad I had gotten them. Needless to say they were ALL over me. my crotch and armpits hurt for weeks after

Chiggers suck. We have them here. After the fact, Rubbing Alcohol will speed the recovery. Rub it in until you bleed - serious. May sting, but they'll be gone in a couple days.

Best thing (if you suspect you went somewhere and got them) is HOT, HOT shower, tons of soap. (no wise cracks) Get them off you as quick as you can when you first get home. Then the rubbing alcohol. You may still get a few, but WAY less.

Best way to PREVENT them is bug spray, before you go. (duh ! right) highest deet you can stand.
