I am definitely hooked after this weekend, made my first scales & more. I highly reccomend if you have been thinking about trying to dive right in. I had all the tools i needed already, and access to some nice G10. been watching vidz by TuffThumbz & Red Gladius for inspiration.

Started with my Gerber/Hinderer Firestorm...great little EDC and i didnt want to worry about messing up a blade. It turned out nicely for my first Anso pattern. Left a squiggle in the middle that is pretty cool. I also stonewashed the blade and drilled the clip for tip up carry.

Wityh a little confidence built up I moved on to my Tenacious. Got some nice camo g10...it has a natural backing and only the top layer is camo, really cool effect. Waved the blade, made a pretty nice profile. Stonewashed the blade as well...(You can see my finale in the background:-)

Finally on Sunday (today) I went crazy..... I broke out the Manix 2. I got some beautiful blue & black g10, and the pattern was very tight. I also waved the blade, this too worked perfectly. The colors really pop....i havent put it down since i finished (except to snap these pics)...

All in all things went perfectly, I cant wait to get my hands on another batch of g10.Have to decde what to upgrade next. Perhaps do some trading after while to keep things fresh...my only problem right now is deciding which one to carry on Monday!

How do you cut the G10 like that? What kind of finish does your cutting/grinding method leave?

I have an ESEE-3 that has G10 grips on it and I really like the material in that instance, but my Bark River with G10 grips (in Matte finish) is too slick for my liking. The contour of it fits my hand real well and still feels good, otherwise I'd be modding that handle for more "grip". I think my next blade will have some real roughed up G10 grips that "grab", if I can get them to be more grippy than my ESEE-3 that would be cool!

^^Used a dremel with 60 grit for shaping, 120 grit for texturing. Slow & steady won that race...if you want to try out different patterns use paint sticks. They are the perfect size and cheap. This was my first time with g10 and I couldn't be happier with the results.

^^Shoot me a message, we may be able to work something out. As long as its the g-10 JYD should not be a problem:-)

That's some awesome work! I've been thinking about trying to make some g10 scales to add a little color to my knives. Might have to finally order some and take a crack at it after seeing this thread...

^^17^^ I suggest you give it a shot! I'm so glad that I did mine.....lookup Red Gladius on Youtube, he has a tutorial for shaping using a dremel, very helpful and encouraging. The Gerber was my first shot, the Manix was my third and you can see the improvement in just a few attempts!!

Ha! Thanks for the encouragement. I've watched the rat g10 video before. It makes it look simple. I have a few low end knives that I can try out on, so maybe I'll see about ordering some g10 sometime soon. The main knives I want to customize are a Bone Collector and Griptilian, which from what I've read definitely seems to add a level of difficulty dealing with the Axis lock.

I do have a ZT 300 that I would love to make my own coyote scales for, since I can't bring myself to pay the price for a 302.
