We called Kami this AM and I was very surprised to learn that shop 2 had completed 18 khukuris. Six master kamis working six days per week for about three weeks -- this is not bad for start up.
They are presently making kardas and chakmas to go with these 18 pieces -- a variety which includes some 20 inch AKs and 20 inch Sirupatis for those waiting. Kami wisely hired a family of "sarkis" (cobblers) with scabbard making experience to do the scabbards. Bottom line is 18 khukuris from shop 2 will hit the air next week. Buttcaps are "thickest I could find" flat brass plate with no sharp edges!
Note of interest -- of 100 buffalo horns bought in Pokhara about 75 ended up in the reject pile. I forgot to ask what one does with rejected buff horns.
The kami who had forgotten how to make a decent khukuri and blew his first attempt at hardening the 20 inch Sirupati reworked the blade with success and has had no more problems.
Bad news is rent for shop is 40,000 NC per month -- about $600 USD. This because the shop is not so far from the overpopulated and inflation ridden capital of Kathmandu. Since I lived in Nepal rent in this area has just about quadrupled.
