Does anyone know why hawksmiths started piercing a heart or a weeping heart in the blade of a tomahawk? Also, why is the heart's point always facing the edge of the blade? Can anyone enlighten the tomahawk community about this?
the weeping heart is just a modified heart of scotch/english design used since the late 1600's. the direction the bottom of the heart points is just whatever the smith wanted. if modern smiths are pointing them in a certain direction ,then that is modern rondezvous myth and fantasy.
here is a picture of a period heart. you didn't think they originated on axes did you? most ornamentation started on a person's skin or other coverings long before they made their way to metal objects.
Hi FSCJedi I have this link which is full of information on old tomahawks and thought you and others might find it interesting has lots of pic's and collectors info history etc
