hey guys i'm looking into motors for my power hammer i need somehwre between 5 and 7 horse. i found a source for WEG motors. one 5 horse one 7.5 horse both under 200 bucks brand new 3 phase. is this a deal? are these good motors? all TEFC continuous duty... both have a service factor is 1.25 (no clue what that is) and they're both face mount.
what do you guys think? thanks in advance

I just posted to your "rotary convertor" thread.

Buy a single phase motor...then you don't need the 3 phase convertor to run it.

I'm running my grinder off the first one in your link's..,only less HP. i hav'nt had any problems with mine!

Michael, I think it's best to go with a TEFC motor in the type of dusty environments we operate. Those slots in the case on that first link make me think "dust catcher". JMO Leeson's built in the USA, BTW.

alright i dind't notice the first one was drip proof and not TEFC

so its WEG or Leeson link number 2 or 3.....

i do like the leeson being built in the USA but all i can see is that cutting into my mini budget as is

keep them suggestions coming guys. and i'll keep trying to sell some knives to pay for this whole hammer set up

thanks

Mike,

My press is powered by a WEG 3 HP motor, if I leave my valve setting at 3000 # it will stall the motor, I dropped it to 2500 # and it's fine. The WEG motor HP is definately over rated. If you go with WEG realize that you will need more HP than they advertise.

mark: any luck getting that thing up and running yet??? any work done on it so far??
i'm finally getting to mine.
i thought of a gas engine but i think it will run way too fast. though the prices on those suckers are pretty damn good....

i might have an old hit and miss available to use. we'll see did you ever get that bradley hammer info i sent to you? thanks

thank for the call larry i appreciate the help

If you have an old hit or miss to run it off of, you've GOT to do it at least once to get the video. I saw a guy at a hammer-in earlier this year running an old Blacker hammer off of a hit or miss engine. It was sweet.

Please see comments in your other thread.

The 1.25 service factor means that you can run the motor at 1.25 times the rated power, continuously with no ill effects. It is a measure of the margin designed into the motor.

There are NEMA standards for how the motors are rated and the manufacturers like Weg and Leeson pretty much stick to it. In Larry's application, he probably needs to use a motor rated for more than 3 hp to maintain 3000 #. Changing manufacturerers is unlikely to make a significant difference.

WEG, are excellent motors. We almost exclusively specify them for our industrial applications in mostly mining dusty environments. Many of our clients specify that only WEG motors are to be used. they have many varieties and its worth getting in touch with one of their sales guys who will specify one that will be ideal for your application/ environment.
