Weight fanatics...

I care more about how the knife carries in the pocket, flatness etc than about weight.

I'm with Ankerson on this one. I will gladly carry a Sebenza 25 or Spyderco Gayle Bradley but I couldn't say that about an XM-18 or ZT 0550. Although there isn't that big of a weight difference between those knives, there is a big difference in pocket profile. That being said, the Spyderco military is my outdoor, hiking and walking knife. Being the lightest knife I have is one of the reasons for that.

Man there are a lot of good points on both sides of this equation. I personally like having a choice between what knife I am carrying for the day. Weight is one of the first things I consider. I'd never go jogging with my Rat 1, but I like having it at work because of its heft.

It depends a lot on where you carry in a cargo pocket on an active field day having a 7-8oz large knife bouncing off your knee gets old. Also most knives that are 7-8oz are thick big folders that don't cut well, and they are bulky in the pocket especially if you have other stuff in your pockets you need to access regularly. Plus I just don't see the need to carry a folder that heavy, there are lots of durable folders that are half that weight, and if I really need something more durable I'll carry a fixed blade stronger than even the largest tank of a folder.

Is the few ounces a big deal, not really, but in these days with all the strong folders at the 4oz why not carry something that disappears in your pocket instead of fills it.

I like having choices, so I own both light and heavy knives. It really depends on what I'm going to be wearing (which is usually related to my activities for the day). I can't carry a ZT0300 in my dress pants, so I've got knives like the Lum Chinese folder that do carry nicely in those pants. If I'm wearing roomy cargo pants, I don't care about size or weight since I've got extra pocket space, but when I go to the gym in the morning and at night I carry something like a Pacific Salt or Delica.

I spend most of the day out of my house moving around the city (and sometimes out of the city), so I need to carry a lot of crap with me on a daily basis and sometimes shaving a couple of grams here and there makes a huge difference on the overall package.

I don't like superlight or heavy knives in my pocket. I don't like fat knives. I prefer a folder that has enough weight that provides a feeling of security and balance. The Sebenza, Umnumzaan, Grayman Dua, is about the right size and weight for me, just about five ounces. I have sold my larger ZT's: the 0550, 0560, 0561 as they are bulky in my pocket.
I have a new BenchMade 755 MPR in an excellent M390 steel. It is a very fat knife, IIRC it's about 0.610" handle width. It is terrible in my pocket; the clip and the scales rips my jeans pocket-rim. I've never carried it more than a time or two. I asked for it, for a birthday gift, and have regretted it ever since.
