I need to make a new grip for my j frame. Sort of a particular design i cant buy. It wouldthe be easytemporarily enough toor make ita from somethe plys of paperthe micarta buy ia dont wand to add too much weight and i hear micarta is kind of heavy. I am not too concerned about micartas improved durability really and would make the grip out of wood if there is one with a good enough strength to weight ratio. What is the lightest wood that is also strong enougb for this?

How about cedar even? Too weak??

Not concerned about appearance, i can just stain it or whatever

Sorry. It is hard to type well on the phone. What would be a wood that is less densest but strong enough. Maybe i should post up in gun forum...

I would suggest you look at Hickory or Maple for a wood that is less densest but strong enough...

The reason Walnut is the traditional choice, besides beauty, is it has about the right balance between strength, density, weight, stability, etc.

And, if you call Mark at Burlsource, I bet he could get you some stabilized wood. Especially if you do want them to look NICE. Then you can get many different choices. Maybe some Koa???

Spruce is actually pretty darn strong, and quite light. Myrtle wood, ash, maple, hickory, all are strong and lighter wood.

Use the wood that looks good to you. The difference in weight between the heaviest and the lightest in a piece big enough for a J frame grip isn't gonna matter much. I've carried a J frame almost daily for over 30 years. Its just not gonna matter enough to make a difference and if ya have one of them really lightweight J frames weight is good.
