One of my wife's uncles from Mexico is here for a few days and asked me If I knew how to make Cockfighting knives/gaffs. I have heard that there are places around here that do rooster fights. I have never been to one. I asked him if he fights roosters and he said not anymore but he collects the knives. He said he has about 20 pairs from different makers in Mexico. Anybody here ever make some or know what it takes tp make them. Making them is not illegal, neither is collecting them as long as the knives won't be used for actual fighting. He lives in Mexico and I don't know the laws there so I aint worried about it. I don't even know if I will make something like that, but am interested in what one looks like and how they work.

I've never heard of them before...

I found a few images on Google images search. Some are quite nicely made

You say they are legal, I wouldn't bet my freedom on that.

Alleged gaff smuggler faces new cockfighting law

The Honolulu Advertiser
Joseph Marty Toralba

Honolulu International Airport U.S. Customs screening agents allegedly found gaffs hidden inside stoves brought to the U.S. from the Philippines.

A 39-year-old Louisiana man allegedly caught at Honolulu International Airport smuggling cockfighting gaffs into the United States from the Philippines will be one of the first people in the nation to be prosecuted under a new federal law, U.S. attorney for Hawai'i Ed Kubo said today.

In announcing the indictment today of Joseph Marty Toralba for allegedly transporting an instrument used for cockfighting, Kubo said the Louisiana man could be sentenced to three years in prison if convicted of violating the "Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act," passed in May 2007.

The new federal law increased the penalty for the promotion of dogfights and cockfights from a misdemeanour to a felony offence, said Kubo.
The law makes it illegal to sell, purchase or transport knives, gaffs and sharp instruments designed and intended to be attached to the leg of a bird for use in an animal fighting venture.

Toralba will be the first person prosecuted under the new federal law in Hawai'i, and possibly in the nation, for the cockfighting gaff violations, said Kubo. Hawai'i state law also prohibits the possession of cockfighting gaffs.

Agents working a Honolulu Airport U.S. Customs screening area allegedly found 263 gaffs in boxes declared by Toralba to contain gas stoves on Feb. 2. The gaffs were hidden inside the stoves, Kubo said.

A gaff is basically a knife commonly attached to the legs of fighting birds that help them to duel to the death, Kubo said.

Toralba allegedly told investigators he purchased the gaffs in the Philippines for $125 and intended to use them for cockfighting in Louisiana. In August 2008, Louisiana will become the 50th state to outlaw cockfighting, said Kubo.

Toralba made his appearance Feb. 4 before a magistrate here and was released on bond. A summons will be issued for him to return to Hawai'i for prosecution at a yet-to-be-determined date, Kubo said.

I made a dz sets over the years. Some with blades some with points. In okie land its not legal know. I never got a big kick out of watching it ;however, to each its own.

When I lived in Hawaii I had requests several times to try making them. My friend would say that he could get some from his cousin maybe so I could copy the design... I would always just kind of shine this stuff on and never made a pair. I think fighting animals against each other is distasteful in the extreme and while I can understand having curiosity to find out about the equipment and culture of this world I would never make something to contribute to that. I wouldn't trust anyone who said they were just "collecting" gaffs either. I'd feel more comfortable with making weapons for people to fight each other in the ring. At least they would have the choice to be there and the guts to risk it themselves.

I HAVE MADE A FEW SETS, NOT BLADES BUT SPEARS,BUT there are specs on them when fighting them in pits, they cant be needle point, blah!!!!!!!!!!!!
