Weird Way to Gut Rabbits?

Seems strange to me. I wouldn't want to risk mashing up the innards, it's bad enough sometimes when the dog rags them. There again my method probably seems strange to him.

It's better to just hold them around the chest, rump pointed away from you, head towards you, and swing the rabbit like it was a baseball bat. The innards will go flying, and there is less chance you will rupture the bladder or intestines inside the body cavity.

I used to do it that way a long time ago - my Dad absolutely hated it. If you really want to do a good job - pull the skin apart across the belly and then remove all of the innards without pulverizing the meat. You would be amazed how easily you can pull them apart if they are freshly dead. Just don't wait until they freeze up or have been dead awhile.

Not a huge fan of that method, although it's quick I can just see the inside of the rabbit full of gut stew from a ruptured intestinal tract. Quite frankly I'd just slit it open and pull the guts, plus heart and lungs out. Doesn't take very long at all on a rabbit.

That's pretty much my method save for I hold them at the scruff of the neck. Done indoors you can even pop them in an old carrier bag - gather the open end up in your hand that's holding the neck, and hey presto no mess. Extra bonus points for that when the dog has broken it 'cos you can bail the fumes out quickly.

That seems like it would be ideal if I didn't have a knife...you wouldn't catch me dead without one though.

Never seen it done that way and we never kept any bunnies that were in as poor condition as on video.

We always gutted before returning to farmhous/campsite as blowies (flies) were bad enough without gut-smell to attract them. Technique was to slit ab open, grab ears and hind legs and give a good flick - everything unwanted flies away - obviously not suitable for indoors.
