Welder basics

If you are going to add a 240V outlet, make it at least 30 Amps and preferably 50 Amps.

As for MIG, a 240V welder with a top end of 175-210 Amps is pretty versatile. Some of the newer multi-process inverter types will allow you to MIG, stick and TIG weld (steel).

Visit weldingweb.com and hobartwelders.com/weldtalk/ Look around, search and ask questions.

If you want an inexpensive ac/dc stick welder, here's one for $125.: http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/ank/tls/5614056615.html

Thanks again for all the replies, it's going to take me a week to follow up on all the info you all have provided! My budget is quite low so I'm leaning towards a Craigslist stick welder for starters. I can always upgrade if I need to.

Depends on what you want to use it for. For a knifemaker's perspective, if you are trying to weld up damascus billets, then the 110 wire welders from HF, HD or Lowes are really a waste of money. A big TIG machine is the best that I have seen for that application.
