Welding 4140 carbon steel

I was wondering if any one could help,on how to go about welding 4140 c.s.to 1018 m.s..I've bought a 150 ton hyd. press,and was thinging about using 4140 & 1018 for flatting,and welding dies.and using railroad rail for drawing dies.the press can be seen on www.potterknives.com/Hydpress.html thanks in advance.
When welding high or medium carbon steel preheat and post heat, or if you are using a wire feed multi-pass the weld. The latter passes thermal cycle the intial weld. This works for welding handle on to billets as well...ES
