Welding bolsters and pomel

Let us know if you have any problems in HT and show us the final knife.

Well, I have welded on my knives with success and failure. When I have welded on tangs all has been fine. I have welded on stainless bolsters on damascus and carbon knives and been fine. I always did a preheat and annealed after the weld. I never did get the welded area in the quench. The first time I welded on a blade and then when hardening and stuck the weld area in the quench I got stress cracks. Not sure if it was the welds fault or the thick section with a square shoulder beside the thin section. Like where your tang meets your bolster. Quenching shrinks the steel and you can cause big stresses. I carry 6g certs and have done extreme service alloy pipe welds. I don't figure to do much welding on blades anymore unless it is by forge welding. Be careful and good luck

Thanks for advice. :) I will anneal before HT. But even if cracks apears I can allways weld again and grind off after the HT, right?

If you have to weld after HT that may add more problems. The steel may require preheat and post heat to avoid problems !

I know knifemaker who weld sucsesfully elements like this. I hope it works for me. I keep you in touch for my progress.
