welding stainless? Can welding?

can you use stainless in a carbon steel billet to bring out contrast?
can you just weld it the same? this is coming from someone who made his first damascus yesterday. it was soo cool now i need to do more but i dont have much steel to work with.
how does can damascus work?

Ariel has posted a few excellent tutorials on can welding. Try searching the forums for them.

That said, I don't know if I'd try to mix stainless and carbon steel. It seems like it would be more of a pain than it's worth even if you could get it to work. Your HT would be all confused, etc. If you're looking for contrast with a high carbon steel, get some 15n20. It's basically 1075 with 2% nickel so it will stay silver when etched. 1084 mixes VERY well with 15n20. They stick like glue to each other and the HT is very simple.

It can be done BUT stainless will cause lots of problem along the way. Just get the good stuff like Deker said.

where wuld you recomend getting said steel?
i checked McMaster Carr which is where i normally get my steel... but they didnt have any

Check with Kelly Cupples. You can see a lit of his prices/inventory at Ellis Custom Knifeworks. You need to call Kelly directly to order. He's a great guy to deal with and gets everything out very promptly. Also, the 1084 that Aldo has for sale in the for sale section here is great stuff for damascus. If you're doig it by hand though, I'd recommend thinner stock from Kelly so you can start out with a higher layer count and save your arm a bit of work.
