my question is can i weld a mildsteel shank on a toolsteel blade .
i've got some short peices of toolsteel and want to make some 4" knives .

The best thing to do would to do a hiddin tang. You can use missle weld to arc weld it the anneal it with a torch after .

Depending on how much you have to attach to, you may not really need to weld a tang to the blade, you can temper the blade normally and then silver solder(braze) a piece of all thread, either brass or steel, to the stub tang of the tempered blade for either a hidden tang or a through tang with nut. and go to the makers tables and select "Ron Ruppé" the first knife on my table is a take=a=part bowie made this way.
