With much determination and prayer and drive and medical monitoring I gave up eating food on 2/05/05. This week will mark the 12th and last week of my fast. I did this for my family and my own personal health.
I have always been a big person. I have a big heart, big head, big ego, and up until recently a big body. A year ago I was diagnosed as diabetic. This scared the pooh outta me. So I decided it was time.

Now 12 weeks later I have
1. Lost 56lbs
2. six inches off my waist ( yes there is now 25% less Ren in the world..tragic I know  )
3. No longer diabetic
4. I have gained over 10 lbs of muscle weight from Lifting, Running, walking, and bikin.
5. halfed my BP meds and they will soon be gone.

people who have not seen me since xmas do not recognize me. It has been a huge personal achievement and I feel great.

and my wife thinks Im one sexy son of a gun...

I've got atrial fibrillation and type 2 diabetes, and a big appetite. 6'3" and 350 lbs. Desk jockey. Love to hike, but have real bad arthritis in my knees (I'm only 25!) from climbing up walls for WalMart and shin splints. I'm losing weight by just limiting my intake of food, changing my diet and habits, and getting in some light excercise. Man, three years ago I weighed about 280 and was bitching about losing that. I wish I was that weight again! Tell me how you forced yourself to stick with it, witness my knife collection growing by leaps and bounds, and my constant posting, willpower sometimes can be a bitch.

Congratulations Ren, I'm glad for you and I'm VERY HAPPY that you did it under medical supervision. Twelve weeks without food is just plain scary.

Glad you made it through your fast ok. Good thing you had medical monitoring. Because, that's how Terri Schaivo ended up a semi-vegetable: chemical imbalance from not enough food.

IMHO, it's a lot safer and realistic to lose fat slowly by exercise and eating sensibly. But anyhow, you made it through in one piece.

Good luck and good health to you!

BTW, how tall are you? What's your current BMI (yes I know BMI is not the best way to gauge how much fat you carry).

Well done Ren. And I am sure that I speak for all of us when I say that I'm glad that you didn't post the pics of the poo that was scared outta you.....

seriously, scary diagnoses are one thing that keep folks in line with their health. Sorry for the diabetes. Keep up the exercise and hopefully sensible eating...

Ren, congratulations that's a serious achievement. Obesity runs in my family, so I know what you're dealing with. I used to be a long distance runner until my knees gave out (genetic condition) and I've just hit that age where my metabolism is starting to slow down (late twenties) so I'm finding myself with a need to change my lifestyle and find new ways to exercise . Hope everything continues to go well for you. One question, what were you allowed to ingest in order to stay healthy and keep your energy level high for exercising?

Good job Ren!! I have always read that fasting burns off all the impurities of your body and good way to start fresh. So is it true you loose your hunger after 3-5 days or so? I have never made it that far :p :o

Cool.

What did you take in? Just water? Ice? How did you maintain energy levels?

Paul

Congratulations!
That is an amazing feat.

I have to wonder though how you will be able to maintain it? I mean you've got to eat eventually. How have they changed your eating habits so the weight doesn't come back?

Also do you have any before and after pictures?

Much continued success.

That's impressive ! Coming from a long line of diabetic's. . . .control is the only way to go ! And I'm glad that you did it was some medical assistance !

Thumbs up, Ren !

OK. . . .now. . . .down to the brass tacks ! Boogers and water. . . .right ? :p :D

You must have taken something. Don't people die from not eating food for 12 weeks? Plus you exercised and all that.

Did you take like juices and supplements? What about fibre? You must have pooped water throughout the 12 weeks.

ANyway, congratulations on your health. It is a great achievement.

12 weeks sounds like a long time and it is. But when you think of 84 days without food. Thats a whole different story :D

Congratulations Ren on beating Diabetes, your achievement through hard work and strength of character will inspire many others.

Hi all
ok..Its true I ate no food for 12 weeks. I did drink a medically managed liquid protien drink that gave me 800 calories a day. A perfect balance of protien, carbs, electrolytes all the good stuff...yummy ( just kidding)
to answer Phils question. Now the next phase of this program is to transition back to food. 12 weeks every two weeks a new food group is added. the program is similar to the american diabetes assoc or the wieght watchers exchange program. ( I cannot wait for the beer and pizza food group :D ) In this process I will learn to eat slow. Eat right, Eat the appropriate volume of food to maintian my metabolism So I am only half way through the program at this point.

man thats crazy, i went with out just 2 meals today and i felt like i was about to DIE. Dude thats just incredible.
