Locally i had 2 choices. Buy a native at the local G&K store or buy it at walmart. Just so happens i was at walmart getting some clothes and had to see if they had the natives because nobody here has ever seen them or heard of them. They got em in sunday and i bought one $39.95 The G&K store sells them at MSRP minus a couple dollars (around $70.00). I couldnt help it. Tight,no blade play, smooth. Sorry to all you walmart haters but to me I did myself, walmart and Sal Glesser right!

Grats man.

I myself have been looking through local WM's, with no luck so far.

I want to get a couple for co-workers an friends, maybe one for myself.

So i keep looking hehe.

I've got to go do some soulsearching...for the end is surely nigh!!!

Naw, but that's because people in the free market keep humanity from falling prey to Marxist and Malthusian predictions. Even when they believe those predictions.

That's the spirit!

Walking Man,

I could give you my credentials in esthetics, but you still wouldn't accept my definition of an art knife and, since most art knives are useable, I still reject your counter-offer of 'decorative knife.'

You can call whatever you want any name you choose, but to redefine that which is already generally accepted doesn't really make sense to me.

When what's generally accepted is incorrect (as in the case of 'tactical' knives), it's sensible to choose a better name. Also, collectivists of all stripes have perverted all sorts of words ("liberal", "capitalism", "organic", and "natural" for starters), so why can't someone outside of that club have a crack?

Getting back on topic:

Paul,

How's that Native working out for you?

just fine. funny but all the natives at the G&K show had a little blade play but the ones at wally world were all tight............and walmart only sells cheap foreign made stuff???.........my native says Golden Colo USA Earth!!

I just got my self one a few days ago at WM, sorry guys couldnt help it. But I did go down to the local hunting and fishing shack and spent about a hundred there to make up for it. I hate to see the little guy get pushed out. But WM is selling a good knife at a unbeatable price:confused: Paul, Hope that you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine.

Paul Wesley,

Gotta watch out for cute little knives. They're very thirsty. How does it cut things that aren't part of your body? My Native slices and push cuts unbelievably well, but it gets stopped by the end of the swedge when piercing stuff.

Wal-Mart specifically asked Spyderco to produce a USA-made knife for them. The Native was originally designed for selling at Wal-Mart. From the time-line of the BRK Natives, I think they did so when Sam Walton was still alive.

Why is this so crazy? I'm certain Walmart has the ears of Lord knows how many congressmen. Big Money = influence.
IN an ideal world you are correct. We do not live in that ideal world.
One more time: It's one thing to be competitive, it's another to make your competition impotent.

Hmm... I see your point, but isn't being competitive competing for customers? And if you compete sucessfully, customers buy from you, not your competitors, therefore they become impotent in the market unless they find a way to make a niche or win back customers. Capitalism by nature creates losers as well as winners. Not making a value judgment on it or anything, but it seems to me that that's the nature of the beast.

Shhh! Don't let on that you know or they'll get you! And then those of us that bought Natives back when they weren't sold at Wal-Mart will be next.

Question for the capitalism-worshippers: are we supposed to love capitalism above all else because of what it can do for the human condition, or are we supposed to love it above all else just because it's capitalism?

I would assume it's the former; otherwise there's no point. And with that in mind, if we find something in capitalism (which one has to admit is more complex than "a free market") that needs adjustment, we should adjust it.

On the other hand, if you want to pretend that the free market is really free, and a capitalist economy is simply one with no regulation, OK. Enjoy.

I'm amazed that all Americans have a gun to their head while shopping and the guy holding it says, Go to Wally World and only Wally World.

Its not like they sell every knife made today. Its not like they are renound for stocking the same quality of stuff as say... Harrods

They cater to the use it and throw it mentality, or those that are into false economy for the most part. The Native is an honest to god good deal. The other knife retailers are going to drop it, but as Sal said (IIRC) the Native was only held in stock in single digits by most dealers anyway. Besides, its made in the US, so no foul there either.

Wally World is a sucess story, and most of the griping is sour grapes. Like the other guy said, either get out or find a niche market that isnt being serviced.

Lol , wally has got them here now an it is a sweet lil knife . No offense to the wally haters .

Schmackey,

What we in fact have is a mixed economy. The more controlled a part of the economy gets, the worse it gets (which usually leads to more controls). The problems that people seek to regulate away were caused by earlier regulations.

Not going to bemoan or abandon it because it's not perfect. There are no guarantees in a free or reasonably free market. There are guarantees in an unfree market, but none of them are good.

Travis55,

Be careful of that hungry edge on your Native.

Temper,

Last night, I was dragged out of bed by masked ruffians who dragged me to Wal-Mart and made me buy some clothes for my family. They tied me up like a marionette so that I couldn't even try to resist. True story. ;)
