Well...I wanted to sharpen my steak knife...

This is nuts! My uncle gave that to me years and years ago - like probably a decade ago! I wish it was magnetic, and it is used for root beer these days! Still does the trick. So glad you posted that! I found it in a drawer and it was laying out and so i just included it in the pic "for fun"...
I have a strong neodymium magnet permanently stuck on the fridge and that's where my guy resides. Too cool for the drawer.

I'd love to be able to implement that with variable speed and get into leather belts as well, just don't have the room in my NOLA APT at the moment. That kind of set up would be great for hand smoothing handles as well, not it is pretty much all with sandpaper, except to knock out the deep grooves with a flap wheel on a drill motor...
I haven’t tried leather belts yet, I’ve been able too get a mirrored edge on several steels with an 800 grit AO belt.

At the moment, I just use the back side of a full grain leather belt that stretched out too much after my waders filled up when the creek was rising too fast - it was kind of a scary deal...pretty big river near Greensburgh, PA - rain started way upstream and we were caught unawares! I step on the buckle and hold other end real tight and "razor strop" up and down...added a very small amount of green compound to back of belt, although it is pretty much gone now, will not reapply...this after flex strop is great for maintenance, and gets INFI and others back to real sharp, real quick! I may not achieve your level of "mirror" although I can get what I call mirrorthe mirror like that on the paper belt on the unit I have, although I usually stop before that, and it is still damn near mirror! The blades I have taken to that look really fine!

Good stuff, and thanks for the reply!

For most of my use, I prefer a coarser toothy edge....its still nice to have a mirror razor edge on a couple knives. For the handles anything over 400 grit makes them less “grippy” and darker.
