Best wishes for a full recovery. I'm an 18 year survivor currently in remission for both types of cancer.

Sorry to hear about the backspring ... had the same custom D2 slipjoint backspring break twice. Fortunately the maker fixed it both times but the repair is not as good as the original. Common denominator seems to be D2 with users more prone to this affliction. Speculate a hairline of rust starts in the lower hardness spring due to lack of protective oil that eventually weakens the spring.

In the many years that I've been collecting and using knives, I have had only one incident of a broken back spring. It occurred with a slip-joint made by Hiroaki Ohta. When I emailed him about the issue, he responded the same day and asked me to send the knife to him in Japan. He replaced the back spring free of charge, even though the knife was 10 years old. It took 10 days for the knife to reach Japan and return. I was impressed by the excellent service!
 
Happened to me with a Queen large stockman, in amber bone. It was probably a 2005 vintage knife in D2, hardly used, broke at rest sitting in a draw.

I sent it back to Queen and they sent me someone else well used stockman. I complained about it, and told them it wasn't my knife, they had me send it back again, they just cleaned it up and returned it.
Queen closed shortly after.
 
After loaning my Demo knife that I bought on the street in Saigon in 1965, and never getting it back, I got another Demo knife. That one and two other Demo knives had the back spring break. I sent off from Vietnam to Corrado Cutlery and bought a Swiss Army Knife (SAK), been using a SAK ever since then. I have several Queen knives, and so far have not had a problem with any of their back springs. John
