I've still been trying to do some forging since the fire. This is the only knife I've comleted mainly because I'm down to not much of anything for tools. Thanks to the Grasshopper for sending me some hammer handles I've been able to use a few of my old friends. All that was used on this knife were hammers and a few new files I've purchased and yes the knife is from a piece of 60 grade rebar. I actually was going to get some Crisco for a quench but after I saw the price I looked at the store brand and what I ended up getting was the stuff priced less than the store brand. After reading the lable the cheaper stuff had a ton more colesteral and saturated fat. I figured if it could harden arterries it would sure work on steel plus I saved about 65c. It worked just great. Never did measure this knife but the face of the anvil it is setting on is 13".

Thats great Raymond. I'm glad to see the fire is still there. I know it has to be a humbling experience to work with just hand tools again. But, humble is a great teacher. Fred

Wow Ray, you do the neo-tribal bladesmithing justice. I really like this knife ( putting the photo in my favorite knives folder) ...and thanks for the chuckle about hardening arteries:D
Regards,
Greg

Good going Ray! Were you able to use your press on this, or is it back up to speed yet?

Hey Robert, the press is in pieces still and most likly be that way for awhile. I dropped the cylinder off for repairs and told the fellow there's no rush. The only thing I could salvage was the frame. Everything else was fryed. Right now I've got about 90% of the dirt work done for the new shop and barn but I'm waiting for plans so I can form up the slab. I went ahead and ordered a kit building from Web Steel about 8 miles east of me. There's a 6 to 8 week wait after your make your order. I hope to be in the new shop by the end of the year so for right now I've got my forge and anvil set up in the driveway. I'll have to find new location once the rains get here.

Hi Raymond,
I am new to this forum so I dunno the history behind "the fire" but from the other postings I gather it is not the controlled sort fire of a blacksmith or the fire in a mans belly that makes him what he is. Seems you had the destructive sort and sorry to hear that.
The blade is a work of art so far and it seems that the lack of equipment does not hinder you much.
Maybe you should call it "the Phoenix", you know, rising up out of the ashes.....
Oh, sooooo cliche I know. :foot: :D but then look at my name....Sweany will be able to tell you about it!
Good luck sir.

Mike

I'd have been dissapointed if the tip hadn't been upswept :)

Glad you had the chance to do a little something Ray, actually did a little forge work myself today, felt durn good too, and I know it must have felt the same for you.

Richard, I've never been one to count heats. The scroll's took a fair amount of time cause they cooled off so fast. Actually the scroll work was a redo. I had something alot shorter and looser and then I saw a simular scroll in a ABANA magazine and thought I'd try that.

She is a Beauty Ray...I knew the fire wouldnt keep you down for long...

Now lets see some more :D
