Some of you may or may not know that the red patterning on box elder maple, as seen on today's pygmy model, is actually a natural stain produced by the tree as a defense mechanism. When the tree is wounded, the chemical is released and red staining or "flame" effect results. It enhances the wood imho and is a sort of battle scar.
