Well...It's Friday...

I haven't seen a thick runt for a minute.

What do we know about Magnacut? Think the runt from todya's group could pry?
Here's what the developer of the steel had to say about Magnacut...
Some Notes From Dr Larrin Thomas:

CPM MagnaCut is the result of my passion for knives and steel. I used a new approach to stainless tool steel design to eliminate chromium carbides from the microstructure. This led to a combination of properties which is better than previous stainless knife steels, and has similar toughness and edge retention to non-stainless steels like CPM-CruWear, CPM-4V, and Vanadis 4 Extra. The corrosion resistance was also excellent, even better than I was expecting, which means that the hardness-corrosion resistance balance of MagnaCut is very impressive, with achievable hardness being 64+ Rc and corrosion resistance being even better than steels like S110V, S45VN, and M390. The recommended heat treatment is 2050°F austenitize and 350°F temper, and a cold treatment after the quench means somewhat higher hardness.

Larrin Thomas - Knife Steel Nerds
That said, I can tell you that Andy isn't necessarily in 100% agreement with the science of the man behind the steel. However, it is a very popular steel in the knife world, so Andy has been offering the steel as an option on some knives. It's not that he doesn't think the steel is good ... it IS a good "super steel" for the end user. He's just not a fan of working with it as a maker, and doesn't personally think it's that much better than an S35VN or the more preferable RWL34 you've seen a few knives in lately.

The RWL34, in contrast, was developed years ago by knife-making legend Robert Loveless, you may have heard of him. 😉 It was developed to be a durable stainless while creating a better finish on the knife aesthetically as well. And, well, Robert Loveless definitely knew a thing or 2 about knife finishes!

In any case, I'm going off of memory here from a recent conversation with Andy on this... and I very well could be misremembering something. So, take that into account.

But, to sum up... Andy doesn't dislike Magnacut and he's happy to keep making them if you guys like them... But, his personal preference in that category of steel is RWL34.

So, if you'll excuse me... I now have to go fact check everything I just said to make sure I'm not putting words in Andy's mouth or misrepresenting things...

Thank you. Doesn't seem like it would be optimized for prying though. Runt would be a nice little pryer in the right configuration.

Honestly the best thing for prying would be a pry bar, you can find edc pry bars that are a thick flat bar with a chisel end, any knife that excels at prying will not do as well at cutting tasks that you really want a knife for. Just my opinion as a maker and someone that uses knives.

I agree with Josh here... no knife from any makers we carry are optimized for prying. Matter of fact, most would specifically make a point to say it's not a pry bar and using it as such would void the warranty as it is considered abuse.

But generally speaking, a knife from a thicker stock that does not have a pointy-er shape would work better. While that Runt had the thicker stock... the leaf shaped blade means the tip gets thin because of the grind... so it's just not recommended for it.

The EDC Pry Bars that Joshua Fisher Joshua Fisher mentioned are perfect for that scenario. Although, I hear kitchen knives from Edge Knife Works make great pry bars. 😜🤣

Sounds like you are agreeing with me that the Runt in magnacut is not optimized for prying.

It’s not a philosophy issue.

Think O1 would do better than the magnacut in a similar profile and thickness?

It wouldn’t O1 has a relatively low toughness sitting at or just above 1095 technically magnacut should be tougher, so would 8670, 52100, aeb-l, nitro-v. I don’t want to put words in Andy’s mouth but I don’t think it’s a knife designed to be a pry bar. I’m disagreeing with the idea that a knife should/could be used as a pry bar. Something like this photo would be a much better pry bar, I’ve never seen a good knife shaped or made like this. IMG_9961.jpeg

looking forward to next Friday’s knives from the shop.

Andy's official response is:
"A thicker Runt, due to its short length may be a better prying option than any of my other models, but it is not designed to pry, prying is considered misuse, and the damage from prying will not be covered under the warranty."

So, at the end of the day... it's your knife, you own it, you can do whatever you want. BUT, snapping a tip won't be the knife's fault if it's outside of it's intended use for the design. I can say, I personally own 2 Runts... one in A2 and one in S35VN and both have handled being used hard without fail.

But, all that "I have to say that because it's official", this Friday's drop is pretty nice on the Fiddleback side of things. Preview should be on the Knife Outpost site Friday morning... and in your email inbox at 3PM Friday. There should be some Warlander knives too!

I miss that guy on the videos telling us how awesome the knives are...

I think its Thursday! But good day to you as well! And youre right, every day is a good day to carry a Fiddleback!
Holy crap - it is Thursday....I took a "holiday" on Monday and have been a day ahead ever since.

Thanks for bringing me back to today.

Onward into Thursday! I've got a Fiddleback for it, fortunately.

I think I'm on point today - Friday for all! and I hope it's a good one to each of you out in the big world.

That Duke looks keen from here. Warthawg could fit into my life pretty well, I think.

I just picked up the magnacut New School Karda with the vintage natural scales, from last week, after sweating over it for a few days....

Amy's Bushbaby is a nice looking EDC (I picked on up earlier in the year) and the lager-g10 always catches my eye....

Thanks to the knife makers, too!
