well now I went and did it

Yes, your comments M4cr0s go right along with the topic of why Himalayan Imports (and a few other quality makers of Khukuris products) are a better buy. I haven't heard of pins loosening up on a HI Kukri so as you state durability is closely related to price. The only problem is that you just made these women very angry.

Above: Chinese SWAT members looking for M4cr0s ;).

Chinese authorities don't like us Norwegians anyway after we gave the Nobel Peace Prize to Liu Xiaobo in 2010 ;) Relations between the two countries are at the freezing point. Let's hope I did not spark a war :p Maybe we'll be needing khukuri donations for the Norwegian army? :D

After looking at the AK with some cure time, I don't want to etch it yet as it it is a pretty glossy blue/ black like an old Colt or Smith and Wesson revolver, still doing the Siru and the other. The kukri machete etched decently in about an hour and a half, but the completely bare HSS blade I put in etched very well in the same time frame. Off to degrease and put 2 in the acid bath, wish me luck.

Hope your bluing goes well the process can be tricky. I've only blued my Model 19 S&W trigger parts and it turned out well. I can see you are enjoying this project though .

Well, not sure what happened with the etch, came out crappy the first time after 4 hours, buffed down with 320 grit and went again, no better the second time, Siru showed no evidence of differential hardening that I could see, and one side of the blade etched dark, the other was mottled, went ahead and neutralized, cleaned and hit it with cold blue again to even it all out, the GK&Co showed a definite hardening line on the belly, but I did verify that the pins are Aluminum,as the front one was dissolving, I'll replace them all with brass pins when I get home, after also epoxying the scales in place with some DEVCON Titanium reinforced epoxy.

My M-43 after a quick rub-down with Birchwood Casey cold blue. I did this several years ago and have removed it and reapplied in the meantime, and right now the blade is not blued.

Not really. The bluing was removed with a wire wheel and this is where the matte finish comes from. The blade was almost mirror-shiny when I bought it, but didn't stay that way for long.
